Strengths/Achievements Able to keep decent tone production down to Bb3 Somewhat capable of keeping pitch and support in the fourth octave up until G#4 Used to be able to support notes up to Bb4 and occasionally C5 Decent pitch in her supported range when in good condition _____________ Weaknesses Larynx is barely ever stable, raising easily in notes above G#4 Tends to be very nasal in placement and not really lift her soft palate Falsetto is very unsupported and breathy, barely even comes out at times Shallow support and control in her mix Throat closes easily in her mix and even in her supported range at times Any note below Bb3 is quiet, unstable and lacks support Lacks breath control and breath support throughout most of her range Very narrow supported range and overall range in general Every register in her voice is rather underdeveloped Not able to connect her lines smoothly with legato, without sounding clearly choppy
Registers Lower register: Bom’s lower register can extend down to an D3/Eb3 very quietly and with some tone. Her range between D3 and Bb3 however is very unstable and lacks control of pitch and tone production, barely projecting most of the time Mixed register: Her mixed register is very underdeveloped with a lot of straining and letting her throat close easily anywhere above G#4, which for any female voice type is considerably low. Her supported range lacks full connection and control in pitch and is often nasally placed Upper register: Underused and underdeveloped. Most of the time Bom decides not to use falsetto unless a song requires her to, but when she does she tends to be very breathy and airy, lacking true connection between her vocal cords, letting the air come through and not allowing her to produce a full stable head voice.
MY VOCAL ANALYSIS] OneHallyu #8 — Lee "CL" Chaerin from 2NE1 VOCAL RANGE: C#3 — E5 (2 octaves, 1 note and 1 semitone) Supported range: G#3 – A4 (1 octave and 1 semitone) One of CL’s strongest points when it comes to singing is her pitch production, which comes naturally whenever the singer is performing inside her comfort zone (her supported range) and is able to stay in pitch as she ascends most of the time. Being a wise musician, CL knows how to use her different vocal registers when singing live, instead of pushing her voice in order to expand her not-yet developed areas. This becomes evident when she replaces high belts with falsettos, like in the chorus ofUGLY and in Marvin’s Room. Vocal positives: Her lower register is somewhat developed because of the nature of her vocal type, with a decent projection and support. CL has good projection from time to time in her belting register. She does not try to sing outside her supported range. Vocal negatives: As a rapper, CL has not shown a lot of interest in improving her singing thus causing a lack of true improvement since her debut days. Her voice is very nasal in every register, with a placement in her throat as she ascends to the fifth octave. Her mix has a lot of chest and is pushed at times to sound “raspier” and stronger, which represents a lack of control in her mixed voice. Her falsetto and head voice registers are undeveloped and only used when the singer does not try to mix higher notes.
LOWER REGISTER Although CL does not explore her lower register as much as she could, it is where her voice shines the most and gives her a dark-colored nature whenever she sings down to G#3 and a more supported voice is present with a decent projection, as shown in her performance of So Sick. The lowest she can go with chest voice is C#3 (see CRUSH), but projection and support start losing form since G#3 and ocasionally A3, causing a more airy production in the rest of the notes with a more throaty sound, which indicates she is using fry to reach lower notes, as shown in Marvin’s Room and Take a Bow. MIXED REGISTER The register in which she sings most of the time, CL owns a somewhat developed mixed voice. Lacking in placement (a nose placement 90% of the time), a good projection can cover this register until A4 with a “healthy” technique (see Take a Bow). Notes above A4 tend to sound pushed and unsupported, as shown in her performances of Killing me Softly, I Don’t Care andBroken Hearted Girl, but vibrato is present most of the time and stability has improved since debut (see I Love You). She can hit D5 with this register, although she commonly does not go higher than B4. HIGHER REGISER There are problems with the placement and use of this register, and even if the singer uses falsetto to produce most of the notes in the 5th octave, whenever she goes higher than B4 it sounds disconnected, airy and unsupported (see Come Back Home, Lonely and UGLY). Although supported in the fourth octave, the projection of her falsetto is still undeveloped and transitions are almost always not in a straight line. Intonation is achieved commonly and legato inside the register is decent, as shown in the intro of Stay Together. The highest she has gone with this register is E5.
Marvin's Room and Take a Bow所示。
Strengths/Achievements Possibly and arguably the strongest vocalist in YG entertainment presently Able to keep tone and support down to E3 consistently Possesses a very agile voice, with good note separation Resonance is present in the voice from time to time Able to keep consistent support in her voice up until Bb4/B4 Notes in falsetto are controlled for the most part Pitch is consistently controlled in her voice Musicianship is very prominent in her singing Mixed voice is bright and more head dominant, so there’s less strain on the vocal cords ____________ Weaknesses Although voice is agile, runs lack precision in pitch Notes below E3 lack support and tone, although they’re still audible and not airy Resonance is not often achieved Notes above B4 are often produced with tension and strain Falsetto register is weak in terms of tone production and isn’t often used Voice is very young and could easily change, so some of the vocally heavy songs she sings can damage her voice Mixed voice is not very flexible and lacks tone and control Notes above C#5 can often sound unstable, tight and screechy Vowels such as Woo (우), Eu (으) and Aye (애) cause her swallowing muscles to close her throat
Registers Lower register: Able to support down to E3 consistently with an even column of sound, through proper breathing and a neutral larynx position. Notes below E3, however, generally become more quiet and less connected, with a slight hint of airiness and less projection, although tone is still present. Mixed register: Normally a very balanced to head-dominant mix is used where her voice sounds youthful and bright for most of the time. Support is present up until B4, with resonance and consistency up until Bb4. Above B4, notes become more screeched and pushed. Upper register: Most underused register, where her voice becomes the weakest and lacks projection. Her voice still possesses enough control of pitch to freely carry out vocal runs even in this register.
