【语法解释】情态动词
1）ought (oughtn’t) to和should (shouldn’t) 表劝告或责任，后者的语气更强一些。口语中也常用had better表示“最好（做或不做某事）”例如：You should / ought to do as you are required.
2）must或have to（口语中常用have got to）表示“必须”。not have to和needn’t表示“不必”。not have to是have to的否定式，needn’t是must的否定式。“过去不必要”用didn’t have to表示。例如：We didn’t have to hurry because we had plenty of time.
3）must还可以表示推测，意思是“一定”，即最有可能，但却仍是一种主观的推测，而不是客观的事实，其否定式用can’t。例如：
You must be very hungry after your long walk.
The phone is ringing but there is no answer. She can’t be at home.
4）mustn’t表示“不许，一定不要”，语气很强。例如：Put that cigarette out. You mustn’t smoke in public.
5）can/can’t可以表示能力，也可以表示可能。表能力如：He can (not) swim across that river. 表示可能时can常用于疑问句或者否定句中。例如：
—Can the news be true?
—No, it can’t.

【短语辨析】before long和long before
before long是个介词短语，在句中作状语，意为“不久以后，很快”，多与将来时或过去时连用。如：
I shall visit you again before long. 我很快就会再来看你的。
Before long he had to move on. 不久他又得搬迁。
long before是个副词短语，意为“很久以前”，多与完成时连用。如：
He had taken a doctor’s degree long before. 他很久以前就获得了博士学位。

【词汇辨析】glare，stare，gaze

【语法解释】同位语从句
同位语从句中先行词通常是抽象名词，如fact，news，question，idea，reply，saying，belief等等。最常见的连接词是that，但还有其他词也可充当同位语从句中的连接词，如：
1）从属连词：that，whether等，例如：I insisted upon an answer to my question whether he was coming or not.
2）连接代词：what，who等，例如：Next comes the question what you want to put in the box.
3）连接副词：how，why等，例如：It is difficult to answer your question how black holes came into being.
同位语从句与定语从句的区别：
①定语从句对先行词起修饰、限制的作用；同位语从句具体说明它前面名词的内容。
②that在定语从句中担任句子成分，是关系代词。当that充当定语从句的宾语时可省略；that在同位语从句不担任句子成分，是从属连词，通常不能省略。
⒈ The news that you heard is not true. 你听到的消息不真实。（定语从句）
⒉ The news that our team has won is true. 我们队获胜的消息是真的。（同位语从句）
⒊ The fact that we talked about is very important. 我们所谈论的事实是非常重要的。（定语从句）

1）要表示A在B的东部，即：A在B的范围之内时，就用A is in the east of B，如：

【语法解释】动词的-ing形式作定语
如果动词的-ing形式出现在名词前后，并修饰该名词，一般作定语。此时，-ing形式的动词要么表示该名词的用途（如： a sleeping car/bag → a car/bag for sleeping），要么其逻辑主语为该名词（如：a sleeping boy → a boy who is sleeping）。
一般来说，单个-ing形式的动词作定语时，位于被修饰的名词之前；-ing形式的动词短语作定语时，位于被修饰的名词之后。如：

I saw the washing woman in his office.
A little child learning to walk often falls.
