In this instance, Nathan utilizes a quick couple of crossovers to gethim prepared for the jump whereas Yuzu opts for none, instead including somefootwork that I don’t have the eyeballs to name one-by-one; but hey, I don’teven have to for you to know that it’s not some trivial business.

Anyway, because crossover is so basic, it doesn’t add anything to thelevel of difficulty in a program. While doing crossovers, the skater moves ontwo feet without any change of edge, or curve, or direction, so it doesn’tshow, or indeed requires, any skating skills. Having tons of crossovers in yourprogram shows one of two things: either you are unable to perform moredifficult turns and steps, or you are not interested in doing so. Also, if youhave to rely excessively on crossovers to gain speed, it means your stroke andyour knee action are not effective enough (Not all crossovers are createdequal. As you watch more skating you will see that there are skaters who cancover the entire width of the rink within a couple of strokes, and then thereare skaters who don’t do so well). Overall, a large number of crossovers isindicative of weak skating skills, weak transitions, and general lack ofinvestment in choreography/composition.
