Day 3 -- Excitement and Myth
From the moment I was told that my VIP needs to stick along the big boss for the day, I knew that I would not have chance to have a good rest today. I checked the boss's schedule earlier, they'll need to go to a press conference in Shatin in the morning. The press conference was planned to last till lunch time so that they could have lunch with the media later on. If everything goes with the plan, our morning would still be quite relaxing, as our only job is to deliver the VIPs to the place. BUT... yes, the damning but came again... Our morning and the also the afternoon was totally jammed in the traffic.
We successfully delivered our boss to the place for the press conference half an hour before it starts, then the staff held us at the doorway. They told us there would be some possibility that the VIPs would like to return to the hotel for a short rest after the press conference, so we have to stay and keep standby every minute. The place was right next to the Korean delegation's home office for EAG, and the Mr. P I met on my first day of job at the airport introduce us to some of his staffs, including my first excitement -- a world champion of Teakwando. That girl is pretty, not too tall, not too muscular. You will never know she was a former world champion if no one tells. The waiting at the door of the room of press conference was really boring, so I took this great chance to urge the pretty world champion to teach me some basics. She tried my turning kick, and corrected the problem with my arms. Also, she gave a great lesson on my dropping kick. Later, she showed some of the ways to make the leg more flexible, and showed me her back kick as I requested. It was such a invaluable lesson that I think i'll remember for all my life.
The press conference came to an end at the most exciting point of our "lesson". We had no other option but to move right away, traveling back from Shatin to TST, and back after no more than 30 mins' stay in the hotel. Ever since yesterday, the first concern of my boss about me is my meals. This time he arranged the buffet lunch with the big boss's secretary and the Korean deligation for all of us... me, the assistant for the big boss and the two drivers. Soon after lunch, I got some new kinds of obligations - to take care of my VIP's good friend, Ambassador J. He needs to get to Admiralty. So, we jumped back into the great JAM of traffic just a few minutes after lunch. We moved from Shatin to Admiralty, then Wan Chai to meet my VIP. The traffic never ceased to be annoying. But at the end of day, I had my first chance to see the competition, women's table tennis double, semi finals. This very first chance of seeing a game revealed yet another myth about the EAG volunteers... or to be more exact, the EAG VIPPAs. We have the almost largest permission to go to the competitions, but our obligations forbidden us from really seeing any of the matches. If we were allowed to sit with our guest, the situation won't be that bad. The fact is, not only that we are not allowed to sit next to our VIPs, but that we have no area to have a seat at all. And plus, no standing in the auditorium... Let's forget it. We were on duty.
Being far away from our VIP, we need to act quick when they start to move. But sometimes, it is no use to move quick if the traffic is not friendly. During the rush hour, we spent hours on the road in the good JAM, moving from Wanchai to hotel, and hotel to the ocean park. I only found out today that my VIP is a really romantic person. Knowing that he maybe a bit early for the Ocean Ps event, he suggested to have a walk at the repulsive bay beach. I guess, all he get would only be disappointment, as the pollution degraded the beach's quality really much, and the lacking of sun light kept us from a good sight seeing. The situation is similar when we got to the Ocean P. Apart from the performance which sent my VIP to sleep, we took the newly built tunnel train up the hill, but the strong wind blew off our idea of having a look at the aquariums.
The Ocean P provide each of the guests a coupon of HKD 100 for dining in the park. Our VIPs are really nice people, they even wanted to stand in the queue waiting to order before the staff of the Ocean P came. The staff arranged a table for us, and as soon as we took our seats, Mr Fok came and had wine with them. With the face of Mr Fok, we enjoyed a free dinner with several bottles of free wines. Maybe this is a good farewell for my boss's good friend Mr J. He was leaving for Seoul tomorrow.
