Broadway Box Office: ‘Frozen’ Sizzles in First Week
“Frozen” on Broadway is one hot ticket.
Disney Theatrical Productions’ new stage version of the animated smash exploded out of the gate in its first week, raking in $926,840 at the Broadway box office for just four performances that played to full houses. If that kind of momentum keeps up, “Frozen” may well shape into the blockbuster the theater industry expects it to be — joining a lineup of Disney stage successes that includes fellow Broadway titles “The Lion King” ($1,976,388) and “Aladdin” ($1,459,263).
The other new show to join the Broadway ranks last week was “Angels in America” ($322,034 for three previews), which played to houses at 96% capacity. That’s a solid number, but it’s likely the show needs to do even better to push the ambitious production into the black, given the epic production’s strictly limited run of 18 weeks.
Most individual titles on the boards were down a bit in the week after Valentine’s Day and the long President’s Day weekend. Among the few shows to buck the trend was “Latin History for Morons” ($750,581), rising in its final week on the boards. That John Leguizamo show snowballed into a success, recouping its production costs earlier this month.
Also upticking: “SpongeBob SquarePants” ($846,580), stepping up a bit when most shows dipped, as well as the enduringly popular longrunner “The Phantom of the Opera” ($1,040,025).
With two new productions in the mix, overall Broadway sales rose less than $1 million to $27 million for 27 shows, with attendance at 231,785, or 91% of the street’s overall capacity.

Disneyland Paris’ $2.5-billion Expansion Will Include ‘Star Wars,’ Marvel and ‘Frozen’

If you want to travel to a galaxy far, far away — or even one crafted in the futuristic mind of Stan Lee — you’ll need a plane ticket to Paris.
A nearly $2.5-billion expansion will bring three new lands to Walt Disney Studios Park, welcoming beloved superheroes, stormtroopers, and even that loveable reindeer Sven into Disneyland Paris’ second park.

A new “Frozen” section will include both the village of Arendelle and Elsa’s ice palace, while Paris’ Marvel expansion only confirms that the scope of superhero experiences is greater than what had been previously announced. In addition to a forthcoming land themed around the comic book films, one of the park’s hotels will soon be re-themed around Marvel art and an Iron Man-themed ride will take the place of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith.
While the resemblance between the two is uncanny, there’s no confirmation that Walt Disney Studios’ forthcoming Star Wars land will include features of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which will open at Disney parks in Florida and California in 2019. Still, the odds are likely. The recently updated Star Tours and Space Mountain’s transformation to Hyperspace Mountain at Paris’ Disneyland Park have been large successes, leading the way for opening the same intergalactic battle and Millennium Falcon-helmed attractions soon to debut stateside.
Walt Disney Studios, whose blueprint most closely resembles that of Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, has historically hosted attractions centered around films including “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” and “Ratatouille,” and features some of the best rides at Disney parks worldwide. The rehaul, which will begin in 2021 and be rolled out in phases, will also bring a new lake to the park, widely expanding the footprint of Disneyland Paris’ second park.
The upheaval of Walt Disney Studios Park is only one of the many overhaul projects Disney Parks & Resorts have in the works worldwide. Construction to expand Tokyo Disney Resort with new attractions, entertainment and lands is underway, Shanghai Disneyland is about to open Toy Story Land and Hong Kong Disneyland recently began their multi-year rehaul that will bring “Frozen,” Marvel attractions and a brand new castle to the park. In addition to two new Pixar-themed areas coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World later this year and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge arriving at both in 2019, preparations for Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary are well underway. Held in 2021, the celebratory event will bring new attractions including roller coasters themed to “Tron” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” a Ratatouille-themed attraction, new dining and entertainment to the Orlando-area theme park resort.

‘Frozen 2’ Will Cover an Important, Unexplored Aspect of Elsa and Anna
2013’s Frozen became the highestgrossing animated movie of all time, so it’s fair to say that expectations will be pretty high when Frozen 2 comes out next year. But even before the original became a worldwide smash hit, one of the film’s directors initially didn’t think she’d be doing a sequel at all.
I recently had the opportunity to speak with Jennifer Lee, who wrote and co-directed Frozen and will be doing the same for its sequel, and she told me about what made her change her mind about returning to the world of Arendelle once again.
Frozen 2 update
Lee wrote the screenplay for Disney’s live action adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. When I sat down with her at the press junket to chat about the film, I snuck in a quick question about Frozen 2.
/Film: I’m a big fan of your animated work. Wreck-It Ralph is one of my absolute favorites, and Frozen is excellent. You’re writing and directing Frozen 2. How did you approach writing that script so that it didn’t just become a copy of what everyone loved about the original?
Jennifer Lee: The big thing for us – and I’m being careful because I can’t give away anything. I’ll get in so much trouble. I think the big thing for me is; we weren’t going to do a sequel. [Co-director] Chris [Buck] and I were like, ‘That story’s done.’ But then one day we just made the mistake of talking about something and going, ‘Oh my gosh. That’s the thing we still haven’t explored, and it’s important.’ Then I spent time writing these journals as the girls. I didn’t do it from exactly what you said because I can’t. And if we tried to do it that way, I think we would have something very hollow.
Right.
So just like the first one, I approached it from the inside out, because I have to. So I hope – but in some ways, it gives it that inevitable feeling and yet surprise. ‘Oh, it’s going there!’ But yet it completely feels like that’s the journey they have. So that’s my hope.
It’s fascinating that Lee and Buck did a complete 180 on the notion of even making a Frozen sequel. She obviously couldn’t tell me what the idea was that sparked such a drastic shift for them, but it’s encouraging that it seemed to emerge from an organic place and wasn’t a reaction to the movie’s massive popularity.
The notion of her writing journals as Elsa and Anna to get back into their mindsets is interesting to me, too. Writers have all sorts of different approaches to unlocking the frame of mind of their characters, and it sounds like Lee has found a cool way to tap into the mentality of the princesses of Arendelle. You can read a few tiny details about the sequel right here, but the plot is still mostly being kept under wraps.
