下面我们来赏析一下S4ep01里 DE就这删除的两段记忆对质的对话，为什么叫赏析呢，因为我太佩服给D写台词的编剧了。这场戏的台词写得非常棒，分别回指了S2ep20，S2ep21，S3ep22，S2ep08，我还是要把英文录在这里，方便对照之前的剧集。
E: You were going to kill him.
D: Yep, the guy just won’t die.
E: It was my choice to save him, why aren’t you seeing that?
D: It was so hard to keep track of all your choices lately, Elena.
E: I remember everything. One of highlights of my transition, remembering everything that you compelled me to forget, like how you and I met first, you are a stranger that told me you wanted me to get everything I wanted from life. Damon, why didn’t you tell me?
D: Would have It made it difference?
E: (silence)
D: I didn’t think so.
E: You asked me to make a choice, so I did it,
if you’re going to be mad, take it out on me, not on Stefan, on Matt or anyone

wanted, the life that you deserved. And I know I didn’t used to get that but I do now, and I wanted it for you, Elena. I would've gladly given it to you, and let matt die. Because I am that selfish. But you knew that already. First night we met isn’t all that you remember.

D的“Because I am that selfish. But you knew that already. First night we met isn’t all that you remember.”（因为我就是那样的自私，可你不是已经知道了吗？我删除的记忆可不只有初次相遇的那个晚上。）有力地反驳了E对他“couldn’t let go”（就因为你不肯放手）的指责。这句话里的that selfish是回指S2ep08那个场表白的两句话“because what I am about to say is probably the most selfish thing I’ve ever said in my life”(因为我要说的，可能是我这辈子说的最自私的一番话)和“and because I love you, I can’t be selfish with you”(正因为我爱你，我不能对你做出自私事)。
D这段话的意思是在说：我仍然在为过去想将你变成吸血鬼的事而内疚，那个时候我自私地不顾你的想法，导致了你亲生父亲的死亡。现在我愿意付出一切代价保住你的命，让你父亲的牺牲不白费，为了这个目标我连自己的命都可以不要，就更别说Matt的命了。你说我因为对你的爱而不愿放手，那好我告诉你什么叫自私，我删掉的那段表白才叫自私，可即便是我最自私的时候，我也向你证明过能够做到对你放手。我希望你有机会，长大过人的生活，过你想要的生活，哪怕你想要的生活中没有我，我也仍然愿意给你那样的人生。可惜你的选择变得太快，当我想要尊重你要“做人不做吸血鬼”的选择的时候，你的选择又变成了“救Matt不救你”。你只提了我们初次相遇的情景，还有一段更重要的表白你怎么不提呢，你不选我不是因为我不会救Matt，而是因为你自己不愿意正视我对你的爱，你就不用找别的理由了。
