Today, in eco class, some students complain about the eco teacher to Helene, and then we have to spend more than one lesson talking about who and how can do better.
I seriously find their complaints ridiculous, I do agree the eco teacher is not good, but they blame everything on the teacher, the class, the book. Have they ever stop for a second to think: How can I do better? not how the teacher should be. You can not change the world, but you can change yourself, and adapt to the world. One thing i realize is that they try to change their environment to adapt them, but they do not change themselves to adapt to the environment. The latter thing is what I do mostly.
Maybe this is the difference between the East and the West. The traditional Chinese thinking is:修身、齐家、治国、平天下, which means self-control leads to united family, which leads to management of country, which leads to peace in the world. Our ultimate goal is to construct a whole self, the perfection of human nature.
In the west, I guess they would rather shape the environment as they wanted than adapting to it. That is probably why they invented all these steam machine, governmental structures, democracy and such. While in the east, we were still enjoying our little landscape painting, listening to waterfalls, and tasting dogs.
Now in this globalised world, we should learn the best from each other. The East should be less passive, and the West should be less aggressive.
