Ahead of McElderry’s Wide Awake album release on Monday, Amazon.co.uk has been inundated with pre-orders.
The 19-year-old’s popularity has generated 49 per cent more pre-orders than fellow X Factor winner Shayne Ward’s self-titled 2006 album.
And Joe has completely overshadowed Leon Jackson’s 2008 Right Now album, by nabbing 232 per cent more pre-orders on the online retailer.
The company’s head of music buying, Julian Monaghan, said: ‘The worry for any X Factor winner is that they have only a limited shelf life like we have seen with Steve Brookstein and Leon Jackson.
‘Joe McElderry has drummed up significantly more demand than previous male winners and could be the first in a new era of male X Factor successes.
‘With last year’s runner-up Olly Murs already having a number one under his belt and Matt Cardle installed as the firm favourite this year, it could be that we are going to see much greater success from the male soloists than we have seen in years gone by,’ he added.
Despite The X Factor’s male winners not having much success in the past, their female counterparts have achieved a longer lasting stint in the spotlight, such as Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke.
