(Wednesday, August 25, 2010) -- Americans goalkeepers faced off Saturday when Marcus Hahnemann and Wolverhampton Wanderers visited Everton, employer of Tim Howard, for a match that ended in a 1-1 draw before 37,767 witnessing an English Premier League match at Goodison Park.
Hahnemann was the much busier of the two with Everton dominating possession and attacking from the opening whistle. Hahnemann made an amazing save when he acrobatically tipped over the crossbar John Heitinga's smash from 25 yards.
In the 43rd minute, Everton argued for a penalty kick, but was awarded a free kick inches above the penalty area when Everton midfielder Tim Cahill was taken down. The ball was driven into the defensive wall where Cahill pulled down a defender to get to the ball and pushed it past Hahnemann.
Everton maintained its edge until the 75th minute when Wolves went on a quick three-on-two counter attack. Striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was the unmarked man and he beat Howard with a tally against the run of play for a 1-1 tie.
Everton outshot Wolves 14-10 with each side managing only two shots on frame.
On August 14, Hahnemann was sharp in making three saves, helping Wolves to a 2-1 home win over Stoke City.
Three days later, Hahnemann did not play for Wolves, who opened their Carling Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Southend United of the fourth-tier League Two.
On August 14, Howard saw his season start with a horrible error in a 1-0 loss to host Blackburn Rovers. The only goal of the match came in the 14th minute when Howard raced out his goal to snag a long ball into his box. He brushed against a teammate and lost control of the ball and Blackburn striker Nikola Kalinic quickly poked it inside the far left post of the unattended net.
Last Thursday, Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Rapid Vienna at Gerhard Hanappi Stadium in Vienna, picking up an important away goal in the two-match play-in series in Europes's third-tier Europa League.
Villa interim coach Kevin MacDonald started a number of reserves, including Americans Brad Guzan in goal and 21-year-old Eric Lichaj at right back. Both played well and after he made several saves in a row in the second half, disgruntled Rapid fans began throwing things at Guzan. This caused referee Alain Hamer to stop play and threaten a forfeit if the crowd did not behave.
"A few lighters, a couple of coins and obviously some beverages,'' Guzan joked. ''It's one of those situations where you come into to a hostile environment and you know the fans."
