Now Pieter, you not only beat our great champion Ian Thorpe, in the 200,...
Pieter: I'm sorry!
You don't have to apologise! but you took his world record. How did you feel about that race?
Pieter: I don't know, it was sort of a dream come true, I was in such good shape and trained really hard for it, and touching the wall and becoming Olympics champion, it was..
Are you disappointed that Ian will not be swimming in the skins?
Pieter: No, I'm not disappointed, we always have good and very tough races and will swim against each other in the future.
Thorpe was in the lane next to you in the 100 free final, the winner Ervin a couple of lanes further on. Was that why you were preoccupied with Thorpe only?
Pieter:"I did not see Ervin, I was focused only on Thorpe. I thought "yes, I am winning". Until 5 minutes later it appeared on the big screen in the hall. I thought "hey, what's that guy doing in lane 2?". I saw the last stroke, I kept gaining on him. But I also immediately saw that he was a fraction faster."
now, Ian Thorpe has also been talked about because of his large feet, is this something that champions have to put up with?
Pieter: Yes, I don't think that ian's on drugs, I think he's clean, and his big feet, you need to look at other people in his family, they have big feet, and he's ok, and if you swim fast it doesn't mean you use drugs.

Thorpe was just interviewed on Ch 7 and said that Pieter Van Den Hoogenband should be an honorary Aussie but that he's too proud a Dutchman to do that but that everyone that meets him likes him and that if he was Australian we'd have the best relay teams. He also said that Pieter will be spending more time in Australia in the next 4 years
I love swimming in Australia, says Pieter.
- And he adds, It's so much fun to be here and to race in Australia -- it's very special.
- The Thorpedo? & Unfinished business?
- Yeah, I'm gonna stay for an extra day because I always have so much fun with the Australian swimmers. We always have a serious meet and then afterwards we have to go back home and uh, they promised they would take care of me for er, er, two days so umm umm
What is live you ideal spot?
Pieter:Geldrop, there I my complete youth has lived. If I another one lands had choose, that absolute Australia would be.

Thorpey do you keep in touch with Pieter Van den Hoogenband?
Ian: Uuuuuh yeah occasionally. Uh not very often, we- I mean I speak to him uuh I mean not regularly. I'm not ringing him every week to say hey what are you doing? uh but yeah we usually catch up after competitions and we actually it usually depends- usually when I'm in Europe we like to spend a bit of time together and have a bit of fun I guess away from the pool
