For Tomes on Tier 1-3 you need to research two Tomes on the preceeding Tier, these can be of any Affinity. For Tiers 4 & 5 there is an Affinity requirement that needs to be met. Of course whenever you get to pick a new Tome you can also go back and choose one from an earlier Tier.
