没想到都这么晚了。past tense of short form. except for verbs, i adjectives and na adjectives and nouns are compared with their long forms. But affirmative verbs are compared with their te-forms, negative verbs are compared with their short forms of present tense.

離さなかった・離さない
かわいかった・かわいかったです
かわいくなかった・かわいくなかったです
元気だった・元気でした
元気じゃなかった・元気じゃなかったです
犬だった・犬でした
犬じゃなかった・犬じゃなかったです
