the character“了”is a modal particle in chinese.
when you use “了” cut in the chinese sentence , remember ~dont make the sentence repeat and repeat .
as english dont like repeat and that weird when people read.

for example “我要睡觉【了】” as a modal particle if you add 了 ,that is correct and if you dont ,the sentence will show that maybe you are in angry or not very happy.generally we add 了 in this case.
for 当我灭【了】蜡烛的时候，我的眼睛很快合上【了】，in this case you can add 【了】randomly but just dont make it repeat 当我灭蜡烛的时候，我的眼睛很快合上【了】，or 当我灭【了】蜡烛的时候，我的眼睛很快合上are both the right answers

by the way the adverbial word usually put forward in the chinesen sentence when you read chinese ,its quite different with english .for example inthe case 我没有时间甚至说 we are acusstomed to put 甚至 forward generally

弟兄们，注意英文中有“had put out”，所以原文表达的意思很可能是“在熄灭蜡烛之后，我在黑暗中由清醒进入睡眠的过程是在我没有注意的情况下发生的”。因此，我觉得不能翻译为“灭了蜡烛的时候”，而是“灭了蜡烛以后”。其它就没有翻译难点了。
