I just don’t understand why the producers wanted to go with the safe, watered-down Girl Power angle for a film that used to mean SO much for native audiences. The thing that used to differentiate dreamworks from Disney was their braveness to tackle difficult but compelling storytelling with giants like Prince of Egypt and the original Spirit. John Fusco’s talent REALLY shone through that one, creating one of only THREE animated native protagonists in a major animated film (that doesn’t get turned into a bear). Now...now the executive producers are watering down any meaningful impact they could’ve had with their films by simply going for what will “sell well”. And challenging white audiences to face the impact of white colonization of native lands and peoples doesn’t “sell well” apparently. I’m just so disappointed to see the only great contender with Disney grow fearful and generic, they’ve become exactly what they hated: gimmicky, doe-eyed, pretty and bland.
