Lost on ferry mission, landed in error at Rome-Littorio on 29th May 1944, apparently flying the correct distance on a ferry flight but with 180 deg wrong direction. Pilot was 2nd Lt Lloyd Hathcock became POW. MACR 6921.
Test flown by the Luftwaffe at Rechlin coded "8+6" in the typical Rechlin style of coding. Later transferred to "Zirkus Rosarius" on Oct 12, 1944, and flown as T9+LK. Found by US troops at Gottingen at the end of the war.

Captured in Italy having got lost on ferry mission in Republic P-47D 42-75971, landed in error at enemy held Rome-Littorio on 29th May 1944, apparently flying the correct distance on the ferry flight but with 180 degrees wrong direction. MACR 6921.
Lt Hathcock spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft III and Stalag VII-A prison camps.
After the war, Hathcock stayed in the service and helped to desegregate the U.S. Air Force.

P-47D-2-RA 42-22490 [OS:U] "Beetle" was assigned to the 355FG/358FS at Steeple Morden, UK. On 7-Nov-43 the aircraft, piloted by 2LT William E. Roach, was despatched with others from 355FG to provide escort to b-26 bombers of the 9th Air Force that were attacking German airfields at Montdidier and Meulan, France. On the return his flight ran into headwinds of over 100mph which caused excessive fuel consumption. His aircraft ran out of fuel and he made a forced landing at the German airfield at Caen, France and was taken as a Prisoner of War (POW).
