Sorry, I think there are some typos and grammatical mistakes in my previous post. Here is a revised one. Hope it's better. And please forgive me if you find more errors, I think this is pretty much the best I can do for now.
I did the mini survey here about a month ago and got 15 responses within 4 days. The result itself didn't really tell much that is unexpected. However, the experience is a little interesting.
Here are some findings I have from both the experience and the responses:
1. Obviously not many people feel comfortable responding to surveys from outside. They may not be interested in the inside survey either, which I have no way to know yet. I would attribute this situation to the feeling of insecurity and the lack of incentives.
2. From the small response samples I received, I could tell the visitors of the forum include people with a wide range of backgrounds. There are college undergraduates, graduates, professionals, some living in English-speaking countries, as well as middle and high school students, who I did not receive many responses from but are apparently a large part of question raisers on board.
3. There wasn't any response which claimed abhorrence toward English. With an average interest level of 4.2 out of 5, and 3 (neither like nor hate) being the least interested, it is clear that it is a rare situation where someone hates English and visits the the forum. And even if there are such visitors, it is even rarer for them to openly express their hostility toward it.
4. The respondents mainly claim they like English because they think it is interesting as a language that is different from our own, and mastering a different language gives them more exposure to other cultures and other perspectives of thinking. None of the responses claimed that they like English because it would help with their career.
5. Some respondents offered suggestions to other English learners: just learn it and learn it long enough. and "it is of utmost importance that you actually use it to communicate."
Finally, I'd like to thank all those who took time to fill out the survey questionnaire for your kindly support. Wish you all the best and see you around in the forum!
