Felipe Massa is in a ’stable’ condition following his horrific crash in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Brazilian crashed heavily into the tyre wall at Turn 4 after being hit on the head by debris on the preceding straight.
Massa was able to apply some braking but the undeviating nature of brake marks on the tarmac, allied to the high-speed characteristics of that part of the track, indicated that he was pitched directly into the tyre wall at high speed.
Television replays from the car’s onboard camera showed Massa being hit on the head by debris, believed to have come from Ruben’s Barrichello’s Brawn car.
Massa was taken to the circuit medical centre before being taken to a nearby hospital. An FIA spokeswoman confirmed to trackside reporters that Massa was in a ’stable’ condition but could not provide further details on the extent of any injuries.
Massa’s car – the front end totally in tact – was loaded onto the back of a lorry and escorted back to the pits.

Initial reports indicate that Ferrari driver Felipe Massa is okay after his bizarre accident in the second qualifying session here at the Hungaroring this afternoon.
In the dying minute of the fifteen minute session, Massa was struck in the helmet by a piece of suspension from Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP contender but despite a heavy shunt in the tyre barriers as a result, the Brazilian driver has reportedly only received a cut to his face where he was hit.
Felipe was airlifted to hospital for precautionary checks but was conscious and talking and is now expected to still take part in tomorrow’s race.

"We had used tyres for the first part, which was okay.   Not perfect but okay, sure we could have made it through to the final session.   Something broke on the back of the car and I didn't have any control over the back end of the car, even on the straight.   The car was just not there for me."
