Thedecision to found Yunnan Military Academy in 1909 gave birth to the Yunnanclique. Since the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, Yunnan has been known for her elitearmy and loyalty to Chinese republicanism. In 1915, Yunnan was the firstprovince to secede when Yuan Shikai tried to proclaim himself emperor, startingthe National Protection War against Yuan Shikai and toppling his empire as fastas it had been born. The victorious Yunnan pursued an expansionist policy,exerting control over her neighbors. The ephemeral Yunnan hegemony came at aprice, losing control of many units deployed out of Yunnan. The militaryadventure in Sichuan was a failure and caused a civil conflict in Yunnanclique. General Gu Pinzhen temporarily ousted Tang Jiyao, but Tang returnedwith his loyal troops and killed Gu. The Yunnan army was no longer an integralforce. Old classmates and brothers-in-arms became rivals.
1909年，清政府创办云南讲武堂，种下了滇军的种子。1911年辛亥革命之后，云南就以忠诚于共和主义的精兵良将出名。当袁世凯于1915年尝试登基称帝时，云南第一个宣布从中华帝国分离，发动护国战争迅速推翻了洪宪帝制。尝到胜利果实的云南开始推行扩张主义政策，想方设法控制邻国的土地。但是，云南的霸权很快就烟消云散，为此，云南失去了非常多部署在省外的军队。四川战役的失败导致了滇系军阀的内讧。顾品珍将军短暂地驱逐了唐继尧，但随后唐继尧便带着自己的亲兵回到云南，杀死了顾品珍。从此，滇军再也不是团结一致的集体了。往日的同学战友变成了宿敌。
During theNorthern Expedition, Yunnan warlord Tang Jiyao kept his distance from GuangzhouKMT government, while other Yunnan troops in exile, led by general Zhu Peide,rallied behind the banner of National Revolution and became the pillar of Sun’smilitary force. When the Northern Expedition tragically ended, the desperategenerals of the National Revolutionary Army decided to return to the South. Theattrition was heavy, and many of them ended up at the door of Guizhou, Tang’snewly conquered land. Tang wanted to take the chance to annihilate his oldenemies, but his generals, led by Long Yun, forced Tang to offer sanctuary tothe defeated NRA.

The coexistenceof former rivals is not easy, but they knew the new ruler of China, Zhili cliqueand their German patron don’t want to tolerate an autonomous Yunnan, and theycan only survive through cooperation. Despite its formidable battle commandersand elite army, the lack of a unified command authority cost Yunnan dearly whenit audaciously joined the Fourth Zhili-Fengtian war.

By 1936, TangJiyao has lost most of his authority over the clique. His despotism and favoritismover his incompetent brother Tang Jiyu alienates many lieutenants includingLong Yun while the submission to Qing undermined his prestige. The former NRAtroops also resent his control, further limiting his potential allies in aprovince rife with factional unrest.

With all of its neighbours embroiled in conflictor crisis, Yunnanese generals see little reason to uphold the fragilecooperation that kept them binded for nearly a decade, and now several factionsscramble to take over power, Each with their own agenda….
