Finnan, the quiet hero
By Guillem Balagué
A Steve Finnan at Anfield he used to sing a "side we have a right to be called Steve Finnan." There was so quiet and almost with embarrassment. It was one of those typical British jokes, again demonstrating that the English are the biggest and best laugh at themselves: the song suggested that perhaps no one had realized who had the 2 for the low profile of side had an extraordinary ability to be the 'silent hero' of Liverpool and yet you're always in the alignments that have led him to win a European Cup, an FA Cup and the rest of titles (seven in total) from the era Benitez. Just as it has played in Liverpool (efficient, quiet, leaving other holders), Finnan has left behind his former club. Among the echoes of the arrival of Robinho and the signing of Berbatov at the last minute by Manchester United, with Finnan to go unnoticed.
And yet, apart from last season when a pair of minor injuries and lack of confidence Rafa Benitez is often left off the team, Finnan has been for most of his five years in the Liverpool player more regular of the team. In the summer of 2003, Gérard Houllier was ahead of Alex Ferguson and I moved to Fulham, and since then the Irish and Jamie Carragher became footballers from which you could always trust and where to start alignments. It has only scored a goal in 216 matches (before the Blackburn and against "the Kop"), but the Irish arrive at Espanyol to pass and defend, not to score goals.
During that period he had to fight for his position with a dozen players (including transfers and those of subsidiary), including Jan Kromkamp, Josemi, Gabriel Paletta, Arbeloa and now Philipp Degen, and until last season was with everyone. They were not the years (32) or loss of form which has finally brought the team, but the good performance of Arbeloa and finally the decision to change the type of technique of lateral. As Benitez did not find a right end good, pretty cheap and, eventually punch to the side, Degen, who gave him deep in the band, a style different from Finnan.
But Benitez is the first to accept that Finnan has given him perhaps even more than they believed could give. "No mistakes, passed the ball well, and in fact has been a couple of seasons the Premiership player who has the greatest number of good passes. He does everything correctly. It is a good signing for Chelsea, no doubt, "he said Spanish coach.
Finnan has character and one of the most beautiful stories of recent football. Wimbledon is not considered good enough in 16 years and left him go. Started to play on the Welling Town, an amateur team, and he discovered the Birmingham which ended cediéndolo to Notts County in the third division with whom he won the competition. With Fulham was the champion of the second and the First Division (the two pre-Premier) and thus Finnan has been involved in all occupational categories in the English league. And now at Espanyol. Fortunately, Steve.
