For all of you considering this purchase read on, as it might save you unnecessary frustrations.
I bought my Lenovo Miix 700 at Costco as it was first available there.
I was truly excited to find a device that so closely replicates Surface Pro 3/4, plus it includes a keyboard at a significant price discount over the MS Surface. I wanted one device that could serve as a laptop, a note taking device for business meetings as well as entertainment tablet for watching Netflix and browsing the internet. Miix 700 Seems almost too good to be true at this price point. I decided to brave the waters and order one even though there are currently no reviews available for the unit.
The GOOD:
- For the money you are getting a well built, Surface Pro 3/4 clone. The only difference in appearance was the color and the hinge which is the Lenovo wrist-watch-type hinge, similar to what you can find on Lenovo Yoga products. Personal I prefer this Lenovo solution as it affords this tablet/laptop a wider range of motion for the hinge. (btw, both are good)
- Because it features M-Core type processor unlike the Surface it requires no fan. In other words it is quite. No fan also means less possibility of it breaking down the road or becoming louder as the fan starts to go. Definitely a win for Miix 700.
- Keyboard is included with the purchase and unlike the Surface Pro the keyboard can still work wile detached through bluetooth, nice feature.
The NOT SO GOOD
- The keyboard is frustrating to use. This to me is a deal breaker and the reason I have ultimately returned my Miix 700. Lenovo trackpad seems too sensitive as it detects thumb movement even when not directly touching the trackpad. There is an option in windows drivers under trackpad to adjust the sensitivity but unfortunately Lenovo drivers don't seem to feature this option. Call to technical support has confirmed this. As is, the keyboard might be included with Miix 700 but it is frustrating to use as your cursor randomly jumps within the body of your text as you type causing you type over already typed text. If this device was sold as a tablet I guess this wouldn't bother me but many will buy this to use as a productivity device as well as play.
- Battery life....nowhere close to 9 hours advertised. I understand that all companies test the battery performance under perfect conditions but I managed to get around 4-5 hours under just web surfing.
- There is no digital pen included. For the device that is a mirror image of the Surface Pro, with an added bonus of an included keyboard...lack of digital pen is down-rite sloppy. Whole point of a device of this type is it's versatility, If you simply want a skinny laptop there are much better options available and you don't have to deal with a trackpad issues. It seems like even Lenovo was confused as if to include the pen with the device as the manual itself lists a pen as a included on some models of Miix 700. OK Lenovo show me a single model that does actually include the pen? Further calling their technical support reveled that they don't even know which pen is compatible with this device (to be fair one person said - it's active pen but couldn't find it) Try typing active pen into Lenovo.com website and you will get no results for the accessory. Two other Lenovo technical support agents actually told me that Miix 700 is not compatible with a pen. Go figure...
- Keep in mind that you are getting an m-core processor not a i-core. M core allows for a fan-less operation but are not as fast as i-core type processors on most laptops or even Surface Pro. Now, personally I don't think it makes a difference in this device as most people will not play graphic intensive games or heavy photo editing using Photoshop with this thing. During my use it pretty much handled all tasks thrown at it with grace.
- As far as I could tell there is also no back-lit keyboard on the miix 700 keyboard something that is available on the Surface Pro 4. To me this is a disappointment as I often use my laptop in the dimly lit environment.
- Reflective screen. I understand that reflective screens create better image/color reproduction. But on a portable, productivity device it is unnecessary and down-rite counterproductive. What I need is a device that prevents glare. Device that makes images easier to see during daylight, reflective screens prevent that because what you gain in image quality you lose in not actually being able to see clearly. To be fair most if not all devices of this type have a reflective screen which is a shame.
- Last strange thing..and this might not apply to you BUT the miix 700 I received is not the same color as advertised in the pictures. It is all black. Pictures show rose gold type back but what I got was fully black model. Now this is technically is not a complaint as I prefer black but a product should be accurately represented with the right photos when sold to the public.
