Andy Evens the Score
2005-09-23
Following the first match upset where Olivier Rochus defeated James Blake 6-4,7-5,6-1, Andy found himself in familiar territory: under pressure. But Andy made it known with an ace on the first point of the match that only one Rochus would walk away with the "W" today. In one hour and forty-three minutes Andy decisively put America on the board, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.
"I felt good out there from the start," Roddick said in a post match press conference. "I was able to take control from the beginning of every set." Davis Cup has always been a special honor for Andy, who increased his singles Davis Cup record to 16-6.
Even his opponent, Christophe Rochus noticed Andy was playing with a different passion. "I know he puts a lot of intensity in his game from the first point, but today, it was just too much. He played with a rage. I could never get into the match the way I wanted to," Rochus commented.
The Belgian fans were in full force, a sea of 3000 plus dawning red, black and yellow. Countryman and 2005 US Open Champion Kim Clijsters was on hand to support the Rochus's. But despite Belgian's early lead and enthusiastic crowd, Andy was un-phased in his goal.
"I approach it the same either way," Roddick declared. "If James wins his match, I feel like I have to win. If James doesn't win his match, I feel like I have to win. If we're down 0-2, it puts a little more pressure on us, but either way (with the opening rubber), I feel like I have to win my match."
Andy's victory evens the Play-off at one a piece heading into Saturday's doubles match. Both Captains weighed in on their chances. "It's going to be very tough to beat them," USA Captain Patrick McEnroe said of the Bryans. "(The Belgians) are going to have to play well. They (the Bryans) are beatable, but you're going to have to play awfully well."
Belgian Captain, Steven Martens, is hopeful that his team can upset the US Open Champs. "They (the Bryans) will have to work for it. This is not a regular doubles team, but they play very well." Tomorrow's match will decide if Andy will be playing for the win or save on Sunday afternoon.
Tomorrow, Andy will continue to bring the wrath from the bench as he supports his countrymen and teammates. This is a unique and treasured opportunity to bring team camaraderie to an individual sport, and we won't be the least bit surprised when Andy's voice drowns out the Belgian crowd.
