Only one actor so far has won an Oscar for playing a character in a superhero movie (you remember the one), but if you look at the top tier of actors working in the industry, you’re bound to run into a lot of capes and suits. Every year in the last decade has featured at least one best-actor Oscar nominee who is also a superhero or supervillain, including three Batmans (George Clooney, Michael Keaton, Christian Bale) and, in 2010, a Marvel hero (Jeremy Renner) facing off against a Marvel villain (Jeff Bridges).
Which is to say, even the top tier of actors no longer resist the siren song (and massive paychecks) of superhero movies—just look at the cast of this year’s Spotlight, in which every single major role is played by a once or future star of a superhero movie (save Broadway veteran Brian d’Arcy James, whose time is surely to come). All of this makes the latest news about Matthew McConaughey that much more surprising: the actor reportedlyturned down the villain role in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, a sequel to the third-highest-grossing movie of 2014 and one of Marvel’s most popular franchises.
Any number of things could have inspired McConaughey to turn down the role, from scheduling conflicts to the role itself (it’s being kept top-secret, and if you remember what happened to poor Lee Pace buried under all that latex, you know a Marvel-villain role isn’t always a slam dunk). And there’s no saying he won’t pop up in another major superhero film at some point—with so many of them being made these days, the odds are definitely in favor of it. But for now he can join Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joaquin Phoenix, andEddie Redmayne as one of the few A-list actors who has yet to take the superhero plunge. For now.
