The Uchiha clan, wanting to use the Kyuubi in a coup d’etat against the village, needed Naruto.

But the Third Hokage kept an eye out on Naruto (using his crystal ball)
一族が强行手段に出るのは难仪でフガクはイタチを暗部に送ってナルトの监视役にさせようとした
The clan knew that taking Naruto by force would be difficult so Fugaku decided to send Itachi to work in the Anbu and spy on Naruto.
でも先に行动に出たのは上层部の３人でイタチに一族がクーデター起こそうとしてると话す
But the three top officials (The two people always with the Third and Danzou) got to Itachi first and told him of the clan’s plan to overthrow the Leaf.
九尾事件で子供のイタチがミコトに庇われて九尾を见てる回想九尾
Itachi has a little flashback of when he was a kid and the Kyuubi attacked (him being protected by his mother, Mikoto)
「イタチはあれを天灾じゃないと闻かされて信じ込んだ 最期まで信じていたようだ」「あの时天才以外に九尾を呼べるのはオレしかいなかった」「オレがイタチに嫌わ れている原因のひとつだった」 ."
Madara: Itachi was told that the Kyuubi attack was no natural disaster and believed it. It seems he believed it up until the very end. Back then the only person apart from a genius who could have called forth the Kyuubi was me. That’s one of the reasons Itachi hated me.
サスケ「お前とイタチはいつから繋がった」
Sasuke: So when did you and Itachi meet/join forces/etc.?
マダラ「それは后々话そう…ただ」「お前がイタチを兄と慕っていた时间より长いとだけ言ってお く」
Madara: That conversation can wait till later…However, I will say now that we knew each other longer than you thought of him as your beloved older brother.

Itachi was given some time to think.
イタチは悩んだ…一族を皆杀しにするという事はサスケ、もちろんお前もその対象に入っていた
Itachi was troubled…killing his entire clan would mean that Sasuke…of course you (Sasuke) would have been included.
だが板挟みになって身动きが取れなくなっていたイタチを决意させる决定的な出来事が二つ起こる
But for Itachi, whose dilemma had left him unable to act at all, two things occurred which would help him make his decision.
ひとつはシスイ杀しの疑いをかけられた事だ
The first was the suspicion put on him that he had murdered Shisui.
强い憎しみからイタチは万华镜写轮眼を开眼した
Itachi awoke the Mangekyou Sharingan from an intense hatred.
サスケ回想「あの时…！」
Sasuke flashback: That time…!
だがそれはフガクが仕向けた事だった. 九尾を操るには万华镜写轮眼が必要だ
But that was what Fugaku had manipulated him into. The Mangekyou Sharingan was necessary in order to control the Kyuubi.
イタチの様子がおかしいと感付いていたフガクは可能性があったイタチに万华镜を开眼させることでイタチを一 族に缚りつけようとした
Fugaku, sensing that Itachi was acting strangely, decided to awaken the Mangekyou Sharingan in Itachi, as he had the possibility of attaining it, and using this to tie Itachi to the clan.
サスケ「父さんが…」
Sasuke: Father…
そしてもうひとつは里の上层部からお前の命を引き合いに出された事だ
The other thing that happened was that three higher ups threw your (Sasuke’s) life into the mix.
じいさんばあさんがクーデターが起きたら関系ない人が死ぬ恐れもあるし
The old man and lady thought that were the coup d’etat to happen that many people unrelated to the happenings might die.
どっちみち一族も杀すことになるから
If either way the clan is going to be killed
サスケだけでも助けたくないかと言われてうなずくイタチで终
Then wouldn’t Itachi want to at least save Sasuke? The chapter ends with Itachi nodding yes.
