Friday April 18th, 2008...

112 Days before the Beijing Olympics, the most anticipated Olympic venue makes it's debut with it's very first test event: The Good Luck Beijing 2008 IAAF Race Walking Challenge.

So ironic, or shall I say, "Dao Mei" that on the day of doing my feature story, the zit that was bubbling between my eyes the night before decides to become a full blown unicorn. I literally looked like a Clingon from Star Trek. The natural light beaming in from the open roof of the nest didn't help in hiding it at all.

It was history in the making, and all I could think about was how funny it was that while the Bird's Nes was hatching out it's first competition, the mens 20 km race, a cystic egg was trying to hatch it's way out on the bridge of my nose between my eyes. Even out poor camera man Yang Fan was distracted.

Zits and cysts aside, it was a beautiful day. A bit hazy but none of the walkers said they had a problem with the air quality. There was, however, a lot of dust inside the stadium (I'm assuming from the fresh construction).

Some facts about the Bird's Nest: (Some Taken from Reuters),

1). Venue for OPening/Closing Ceremonies, all the Athletic
(Track and Field Events) and football finals.

2). Cost: $3.5 billion Yuan ($500.7 million USD)

3). Floor space of 258,000 sq meters and a seating capacity
of 91,000 seats, 11,000 of those temporary

4). 42,000 tonnes of steel were used -- that's the weight of
about 6,000 African elephants.

5). Construction started same time as Water Cube, December
2003 but was temporarily halted in 2004 dues to rising
cost of materials.

6). After Olympics, the Nest will be home to Beijing Guoan
Football Club and an auction will also be held for naming
rights.
