প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার সভাপতিত্বে মন্ত্রিসভার আজকের বৈঠকে বহুল আলোচিত ও বিতর্কিত এই খসড়া আইনটি অনুমোদন করা হলো।
বর্তমানে উচ্চ আদালতের বিচারপতিদের অপসারণের ক্ষমতা সুপ্রিম জুডিশিয়াল কাউন্সিলের আওতায় রয়েছে, যে কাউন্সিলের নেতৃত্ব দেন প্রধান বিচারপতি নিজেই।
আইনমন্ত্রী আনিসুল হক বিবিসিকে বলেছেন, সংবিধানের সব জায়গাতেই যাতে সংসদীয় গণতন্ত্রের প্রাধান্য থাকে সেজন্যই সরকার এই সংশোধনীর উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে।
সরকার বলছে, ১৯৭২ সালের সংবিধানের আলোকে এই সংশোধনী আনা হয়েছে। ওই সংবিধানে বিচারপতিদের অভিশংসনের ক্ষমতা ছিলো জাতীয় সংসদের কাছে।
