    “Own”Your Children’s Education
“Helping them isn’t about showing your kids how to do the work. It’s about being genuinely interested and having regular conversations about what they’re learning,”says J. Gary Knowles, a professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, part of the University of Toronto.
Rozon has a slew of suggestions for how to get more involved. “Get to know the teacher. Discuss ways to tailor the assignments to your child’s learning style. Spend time in the classroom. Ask for outlines of unit studies so you can find supplementary materials at the library or through videos. Read your child’s textbooks: If you work a few pages ahead, you’ll be able to help them with problems they encounter.”
Reading is another must, says Rozon. “Even after your children can read themselves, hearing somebody else read aloud is important. We nearly always have a book on the go; we read for at least a half hour before bedtime.”
The more engaged a parent is, the more the child benefits. adds Bruce Arai. “The evidence is clear: Parental involvement is one of the most important factors in school success.” Arai cites the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, sponsored by Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC), which is measuring all aspects of child development. “The hours children spend in class are but one element of their education,” states HRDC, which says parental support, along with teacher support and a positive attitude towards school, all contribute to academic success.
“I see every moment of every day as a learning experience,” says Goforth. “The most satisfying part of it is seeing the love of learning continued. I’m not squelching my children’s desire to learn by insisting they learn. They learn because they want to.” Adds Jeanne Lambert, mother of Carey Graham: “Make the time, take the time, guide, lead, and encourage, If nothing else, your children learn you care, and that’s the most important lesson you can give them.”

      TV Game Shows

One of the most fascinating 迷人things about television is the size of the audience. A novel can be on the "best seller" lists with a sale of fewer than 100,000 copies, but a popular TV show might have 70 million TV viewers. TV can make anything or anyone well-known overnight.
This is the principle behind "quiz" or "game" shows, which put ordinary people on TV to play a game for prizes and money. A quiz show can make anyone a star, and it can give away thousands of dollars in the U.S. and almost everyone watched them. Charles Van Doren, an English instructor, became rich and famous after winning money on several shows. He even had a career as a television personality. But one of the losers proved that Charles Van Doren was cheating. It turned out that the show's producers who were pulling the strings, gave the answers to the most popular contestants beforehand. Why? Because if the audience didn't like the person who won the game, they turned the show off. The result of this cheating was a huge scandal. Based on his story, a movie under the title "Quiz Show" is on 40 years later.

Charles Van Doren is no longer involved with TV. But game shows are still here, though they aren't taken as seriously. In fact, some of them try to be as ridiculous as possible. There are shows that send strangers on vacation trips together, or that try to cause newly-married couples to fight on TV, or that punish losers by humiliation them. The entertainment now is to see what people will do just to be on TV. People still win money, but the real prize is to be in front of an audience of millions.

        Plants and Mankind

Botany, the study of pants, occupies a peculiar position in the history of human knowledge. We don't know what our stone Age ancestors knew about plants, but from what we can observe of preindustrial societies that still exist, a detailed learning of plants and their properties must be extremely ancient. This is logical. Plants are the basis of the food pyramid for all living things, even for other plants. They have always been enormously important to the welfare of people, not only for food, but also for clothing, weapon, tools, dyes, medicines, shelter, and many other purposes. Tribes living today in the jungle of the Amazon recognize hundreds of plants and know many properties of each. To them botany has no name and is probably not even recognized as a special branch of "knowledge" at all.

Unfortunately, the more industrialized we become the farther away we move from direct contact with plants, and the less distinct out knowledge of botany grows. Yet everyone comes unconsciously on an amazing amount of botanical knowledge, and few people will fail to recognize a rose an apple or an orchid. When our Neolithic ancestors, living in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago, discovered that certain grasses could be harvested and their seeds planted for richer yields the next season, the first great step in a new association of plants and humans was taken. Grains were discovered and from them flowed the marvel of agriculture: cultivated crops. From then on, humans would increasingly take their living from the controlled production of a few plants, rather than getting a little here and a little there from many varieties that grew wild and the accumulated knowledge of tens of thousands of years of experience and intimacy with plants in the wild would begin to fade away.

          Brands
The word brand is a comprehensive term that encompasses other narrower terms. A brand is a name, term, symbol, and/or special design that is intended to identify the goods or services of one seller or group of sellers. A brand differentiates one seller’s products from those of competitors. A brand name consists of words, letters, and/or numbers that can be vocalized. A brand mark is the part of the brand that appears in the form of a symbol, design, or distinctive coloring or lettering. It is recognized by sight but may not be expressed when a person pronounces the brand name.
A trademark is a brand that is given legal protection because, under the law, it has been appropriated by one seller. Thus trademark is essentially a legal term. All trademarks are brands and thus include the words, letters, or numbers that can be pronounced. They may also include a pictorial design. Some people erroneously believe that the trademark is only the pictorial part of the brand.
One major method of classifying brands is on the basis of who owns them—producers or middlemen. Sunbeam, Florsheim, Spalding (athletic products), and Sara Lee are producers’ brands, while Allstate, Shurfine, Sysco, Craftsman, and Penncrest are middlemen's brands.
The terms national and private have been used to describe producer and middleman brand ownership, respectively. However, marketing people prefer the producer middleman terminology. To say that the brand of poultry feed marketed in three states by a small Birmingham, Alabama, manufacturer is a national brand, whereas the brands of Penney’s or Sears are private brands, stretches the meaning of the terms national and private.
          练习
          1. “Brand” is a general term which covers narrower terms such as “brand name”, “brand mark”, and “trademark”.

          2. A brand name is intended to impress customers with an attractive and original design while a trademark is intended to do so with a peculiar sound.
          A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned
          3. Trademarks are protected by law while brand names are not.

Why is the Native Language Learnt So Well
How does it happen that children learn their mother tongue so well? When we compare them with adults learning a foreign language, we often find this interesting fact. A little child without knowledge or experience often succeeds in a complete mastery of the language. A grown-up person with fully developed mental powers, in most cases, may end up with a faulty and inexact command. What accounts for this difference?
Despite other explanations, the real answer in my opinion lies partly in the child himself, partly in the behaviour of the people around him. In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue is the most favourable of all, namely, the first years of life. A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the right pronunciation, right intonation, right use of words and right structure. He drinks in all the words and expressions which come to him in a fresh. Ever-bubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation.
Then the child has, as it were, private lessons all the year round, while an adult language-student had each week a limited number of hours which he generally shares with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations, always accompanied by the tight kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural, such as is often found in language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in June or scorching heat in January. And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him. Again and again, when his attempts at speech are successful, his desires are understood and fulfilled.
Finally, though a child's "teachers" may not have been trained in language teaching, their relations with him are always close a personal. They take great pains to make their lessons easy.
            1. Compared with adults learning a foreign language, children learn their native language with ease.
            A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned
            2. Adults' knowledge and metal powers hinder their complete mastery of a foreign language.

            3. The reason why children learn their mother tongue so well lies solely in their environment of learning.
            A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned
            4. Plenty of practice in listening during the first years of life partly ensures children's success of learning their mother tongue.
             A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned
            5. A child learning his native language has the advantage of having private lessons all the year round.

            7. So far as language teaching is concerned, the teacher's close personal relationship with the student is more important than the professional language teaching training he has received.

              Easy Learning
Students should be jealous. Not only do babies get to doze their days away, but they’ve also mastered the fine art of learning in their sleep.
By the time babies are a year old they can recognize a lot of sounds and even simple words. Marie Cheour at the University of Turku in Finland suspected that they might progress this fast because they learn language while they sleep as well as when they are awake.
To test the theory, Cheour and her colleagues studied 45 newborn babies in the first few days of their lives. They exposed all the infants to an hour of Finnish vowel sounds—one that sounds like “oo”, another like “ee” and a third boundary vowel peculiar to Finnish and similar languages that sounds like something in between. EEG recordings of the infant’s brains before and after the session showed that the newborns could not distinguish the sounds.
Fifteen of the babies then went back with their mothers, while the rest were split into two sleep-study groups. One group was exposed throughout their night-time sleeping hours to the same three vowels, while the others listened to other, easier-to-distinguish vowel sounds.
When tested in the morning, and again in the evening, the babies who’d heard the tricky boundary vowel all night showed brainwave activity indicating that they could now recognise this new sound. They could identify the sound even when its pitch was changed, while none of the other babies could pick up the boundary vowel at all.
Cheour doesn’t know how babies accomplish this night-time learning, bunt she suspects that the special ability might indicate that unlike adults, babies don’t “turn off” their cerebral cortex while they sleep. The skill probably fades in the course of the first year of life, she adds—so forget the idea that you can pick up tricky French vowels as an adult just by slipping a language tape under your pillow. But while it may not help grown-ups, Cheour is hoping to use the sleeping hours to give remedial help to babies who are genetically at risk of language disorders.
              练习:

Traditionally(传统上), it has been the worker's role to worker and management's role to mange(管理). Managers have planned and directed(指导) the firm's operation(运转) with little thought consulting(商议) the labor劳工 force力量. Managers have rarely felt compelled to obtain获得 the worker's opinions意见 or to explain说明 their decisions 决议to their employees职工. At most, companies have provided "suggestion boxes" in which workers could place ideas for improving改善 procedures程序. In recent years最近几年, however, many management specialists 专家have been arguing争论 that workers are more than sellers of labor-they have a vital stake in the company and many be able to make significant contributions 贡献to its management. Furthermore此外, major company decisions profoundly深深的 affect影响 workers and their dependents家庭. This is particularly显著和 true of plant closings, which may put thousands on the unemployment失业 lines. Should workers, then, play a stronger role in management?
Workers should have a role in management. At the very least丝毫, the labor force should be informed通知 of major policy decisions. (A common complaint among rank-and-file workers is the lack of information about company policies and actions.) Between 1980 and 1985 about five million workers were the victims 受害of plant closings and permanent layoffs, often with no warning. At least 至少90 day's notice ought to应该 be given in such instances so that workers have time to adjust修整. Management should consult商议 workers before closing a plant, because the workers might be应该 able to suggest ways of improving 改善productivity生产力 and reducing costs降低成本 and might be willing to乐于 make concessions让步 that will keep the plant operating.
It should become a general practice to include workers in some managerial decision making. There ought to be representative代表s of the workers on the firm's board of directors or other major policymaking groups. If rank-and-file普通 workers are given a voice in the planning and management of the work flow程, they will help to make improvement改进, their morale 士气will rise高涨, and their productivity will increase. As a further incentive深远的动机, they must be given a share in分享 the company's profits利益. This can be done through employee stockownership plans, bonuses, or rewards for efficiency and productivity. Finally,最后 when a plant can no longer不再 operate at a profit, the workers should be given the opportunity to purchase the plant and run it themselves.
                1. Traditional workers showed no interest in management.

                  American Sports
The United States is a sports-loving nation. Sports in America take a variety of forms; organized competitive struggles, which draw huge crowds to cheer their favorite team to victory; athletic games, played for recreation anywhere sufficient space is found; and hunting and fishing. Most sports are seasonal, so that what is happening in sports depends upon the time of year. Some sports are called spectator sports, as the number of spectators greatly exceeds the number playing in the game.
Baseball is the most popular sport in the US. It is played throughout the spring and summer, and professional baseball teams play well into the fall. Although no other game is exactly like baseball, perhaps the one most nearly like it is the English game of cricket.
Football is the most popular sport in the fall. The game originated as a college sport more than 75 years ago. It is still played by almost every college and university in the country, and the football stadiums of some of the largest universities seat as many as 80,000 people. The game is not the same as European football or soccer. In American football there are 11 players on each team, and they are dressed in padded uniforms and helmets because the game is rough and injuries are likely to occur.
Basketball is the winter sport in American schools and college. Like football, basketball originated in the US and is not popular in other countries. Many Americans prefer it to football because it is played indoors throughout the winter and because it is a faster game. It is a very popular game with high schools, and in more than 20 states, state-wide high school matches are held yearly.
Other spectator sports include wrestling, boxing, and horse racing. Although horse-racing fans call themselves sportsmen, the accuracy of term is questionable, as only the jockeys who ride the horses in the races can be considered athletes. The so-called sportsmen are the spectators, who do "not assemble" primarily to see the horse race, but to bet upon the outcome of each race. Gambling is the attraction of horse racing.
                  1. Hunting and fishing are mainly favored by men, young and old, in the US.

                  2. The professional baseball teams that play well are allowed to play in the fall after the regular baseball seasons of spring and summer.

                  3. Baseball shares many features with the English game of cricket.

                  4. Football can be classified as a spectator sport.
                  A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned
                  5. Many Americans like basketball better than football because the latter is so harsh that players have to wear special uniforms.
                  A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned
                  6. Basketball in American is so popular with universities that nation-wide university matches are held yearly.

Lower Body Fat Means Better Performance

These days, fashion models and pop stars are not the only people who have to watch their waistline. Football players who miss a few kicks and let their belly hanging out a little too much are likely to be attacked by rabid fans or even the president of a country1.
The latest football star to draw the attention of the "fat police" is Barcelona's Ronaldinho,26. Last Friday, a Spanish sports daily published two photos of the Brazilian star without his shirt. One was taken in November 2003; the other was taken this month. In the most recent one,the star's waistline seems to have a little extra padding2.
Another Spanish sports daily published similar before-and-aider photos and argued that the star has "lost his explosiveness and velocity" and is“worn out". The cause, according to the news paper, is his poor physical fitness.
However, the player's coach, Frank Rijkaard, insists that he's satisfied with Ronaldinho's form and fitness. And after Barcelona's victory over Athletic Bibao on Sunday, Ronaldinho challenged photographers to take pictures of him when he took off his shirt.
"I don't have anything to hide," he said.
Fellow Brazilian Ronaldo, 30, of Real Madrid, faced similar criticism before the 2006 World Cup. But the criticism didn't come from a bunch of sports reporters: It came from the president of Brazil.
"So, what is it?" Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asked the national soccer team's coach in his office last June, according to the Associated Press. "Is he [Ronaldo] fat or not?"
"He is very strong, president," Carlos Alberto Parreira reportedly said at the time. "He is not that boy anymore, His body type has changed."
The game of footfall demands that players put as much emphasis on fitness as they can do on dribbling, passing or shooting.
During a proper training regimen, football players normally follow a load-fatigue-recovery pattern3. They push their body toward a higher mark of fitness and experience a slight and brief drop in performance. Then they begin the recovery process, which will ideally carry their performance to an even higher plane.
However, sometimes non-physical factors can influence a player's poor fitness. In Ronaldinho's case, for instance, people - often unnamed - have blamed everything from the pressure of contract negotiations to personal problems and too many advertising commitments.

                        A New Start
After Christmas comes the anti-Christmas. If the festive season is all about filing up on the things you like that are bad for you, then the new year is the ‘detox season' - when people across the western world adopt special diets to lose weight and get rid of the vague feeling that they have spent the last few weeks poisoning themselves.
But are detox diets really necessary? After all毕竟, the body itself gets rid of unwanted substances. That's what the liver and kidney are for.
"The detox fad - or fads, as there are many methods - is an example of the capacity of people to believe in and pay for magic despite the lack of any sound evidence1," says Martin Wiseman, professor of human nutrition at the University of Southampton in the UK.
Most of the pills, juices, teas and oils that are sold for their detoxifying effects on the body have no scientific foundation for their claims, according to the research. People would be better off having a glass of water and going to bed early.
Detox diets may be magic rather science, but they are the kind of magic which many people want to perform. That may have something to do with the westen diet in general.
Scientists and dieticians argue that the benefits people feel are not due to their body getting rid of excessive toxins but are due to changing from what is likely to have been a 'poor' diet.
Having fewer headaches, for example, is probably the result of being fully hydrated due to drinking so much water and better skin may be due to eating more fruit and vegetables.
Detox diets may also be dangerous, as they may deprive vulnerable groups – pregnant women, for instance, or growing teenagers - of the kind of nutrients they need.
Yet their popularity continues to rise. This may be something to do with the way that food works within many western cultures2. Generally, a country's food develops along with its economy and society. Food becomes part of a person's cultural identity.
In some countries, this link has been broken. In the UK, for example, rapid industrialization in the 18th and 19th centuries saw millions of people move from the countryside to the towns interrupting the development of a national cuisine. The United States, a country of immigrants from many different places, has found it hard to develop a national cuisine: In both places, comparatively few people cook for themselves and food supply is .dominated by big processing and agribusiness companies.
Detox diets are more popular in these countries than in places like France and Italy, where strong links between food and national culture remain, and where far more people regularly cook for themselves instead of buying processed foods.
Perhaps detox diets are successful because many westerners have lost mast in what they eat. On the other hand, they may help re-introduce people to the kind of food that is necessary for a healthy diet. And after learning that, they won't poison themselves in the first place.
This would mean radical changes in the way that people eat across the west. And that would be an unwelcome development for the food industry. From the business point of view, it is much better to sell people the problem and then sell them the solution.

                        练习
                        1. Detox begins after Christmas when people think that they have been overeating during the Christmas season and have taken in many substances that are bad for their health.
                        A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned
                        2. Many pregnant women and growing teenagers are suffering from mal-nutrition because of the detox-diets they take.
                        A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned
                        3. Both the UK and the USA lack a national cuisine as a result of similar historical
                        development.
                        A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned
                        4. The French and the Italians cook for themselves more often than the British and the Americans, which helps them to keep the link between food and their culture.

                          A New Start
