On Tuesday, February 18, 2014 an error in our student information database was discovered that made a limited amount of information from your application viewable to a limited number of other applicants from February 11th until February 18th.
I am very sorry for this error. Information security is a high priority of the University of Waterloo and we take this situation extremely seriously.
We have no evidence to suggest that information in the system was downloaded or accessed by any other party.
Let me reassure you that your name, contact information and other personal information were not visible and our team moved to correct the error very swiftly.
The limited application information potentially exposed included the program being applied to, prior educational institutions attended and standardized test scores (if provided) of applicants who were identified only by ID number. No financial, contact, or health information of our applicants was compromised.
Within 30 minutes of becoming aware of the error, University IT staff took steps to correct it. We have investigated the cause of the error and we have put measures in place to ensure that the integrity of your application information is preserved and will not be repeated. We have also referred the matter to the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.
If you have any questions about your application or the security of your information, please contact Nancy Weiner, Associate Registrar, Admissions and Interim Registrar at nweiner@uwaterloo.ca.
