A Liverpool supporter has reportedly been stabbed to death in Kenya following the club’s 5-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday.
The report comes from Kenyan news sourceStandard Digital, which says that Anthony Muteitha’s death occurred in Meru town, about 140 miles north east of Nairobi.
The source claims that fans gathered at Marete’s bar to watch the match between the clubs placed 1st and 4th in the table heading into the weekend.
Things turned sour after Liverpool jumped out to a 4-0 lead 20 minutes into the match and Reds fans at the bar – backed by Chelsea and Manchester United fans – began to hurl taunts at Arsenal supporters.
Witnesses claim that Muteitha and David Mwangi argued throughout the match and that the situation became particularly heated once the final whistle blew confirming Liverpool’s 5-1 victory. The men continued their exchange outside the bar when Mwangi allegedly stabbed Muteitha before fleeing the scene on foot.
Muteitha was then rushed to Meru’s Level Five hospital, but sadly died of his injuries shortly thereafter.
Area police boss Tom Odero claims Mwangi remains at large and that a manhunt has commenced to arrest the assailant. Mwangi’s motorbike, which he used to attend the match, has been impounded.
The incident comes just months after a Manchester United fan in Nairobi committed suicide after watching his side lose 1-0 to Newcastle.
