There is nothing new in having a 55 year old actor portraying The Doctor!! But when that actor is following the youngest actor to ever be The Doctor it does add a bit of a challenge to the daring newcomer….and to the show’s writer. It is worth noting that the Doctor Who fan base has been thrilled by and large with the selection of Peter Capaldi to inhabit the character of their favorite Time Lord!! Capaldi’s stellar acting credentials as well as his life-long love of all things “Who”, combine to make him very capable of creating an exciting and possibly surprising 12th Doctor. And according to show-runner Steven Moffat, Peter’s age will not affect Doctor Who’s personality (the show?? or the Doctor himself??). Moffat went on to say:
“I was watching it this morning, it’s all the difference in the world – because suddenly he’s a man in his 50s with grey hair – and [yet] it’s no difference at all, it’s weird….never mind that, John Hurt’s 73, and how great was he? And kids love the John Hurt Doctor.”
Addressing the claims by some fans that the show will now step away from the Time Lord’s evolving sexuality and how that sexuality is not a part of Classic Who, Moffat had this to say:
“People talk about sex in ‘Doctor Who’ – I heard someone say that to me, ‘You’ve sexualised the Doctor.’ It’s a fact of the canon of the show that the Doctor was a married man and had children. We know that he flirts, we know that he falls in love, we know that he has the full range of responses in that. The story of Doctor Who is that he’s not a deity, but some people think he is, and sometimes he tries to live up to that.”
Filming of the 8th series is currently under way in Cardiff, Wales and will debut on BBC One later this year.

Hundreds of international TV buyers were dazzled by a surprise appearance from the new Doctor Peter Capaldi at BBC Worldwide’s annual Showcase event in Liverpool.
Capaldi, who has started filming the new series of Doctor Who, emerged from the iconic TARDIS to the delight of the audience and chatted briefly with Graham Norton.
Afterwards he commented: “As a lifetime follower of the show, I'm delighted to see its global success. And I'm looking forward to sharing with the world the very exciting journey the new series is taking us on”.
Earlier today it was announced that former The History Boys star Samuel Anderson would be joining Doctor Who as a recurring character for Series 8.
Peter Capaldi's attendance was part of an evening celebrating the best of British TV talent, with appearances including Sir David Attenborough, the presenters of Top Gear, Bollywood dancing from India’s smash hit version of Strictly Come Dancing and a special pre-recorded piece from Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch.
Cumberbatch appeared in a specially shot video, where he apologised for not being able to attend the event but teased the audience as to whether Moriarty’s supposed return at the end of the latest series of Sherlock was real or not.
The annual 4-day Showcase event, hosted by BBC Worldwide - the main commercial arm of the BBC - brings executives from international broadcasters together and provides them with the opportunity to watch new programmes available for international sale. This year 2,800 hours of British TV content are available to buy covering drama, comedy, natural history, factual entertainment, formats, science and children’s; enabling buyers to take the best of British television programming to viewers around the globe.
In 2012/13, BBC Worldwide generated headline profits of £156m and headline sales of £1,116m and returned £156m to the BBC.

Proof That New Doctor Who Star Peter Capaldi Is Awesome
As if you needed another reason to love new Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi; here’s something that will melt the hearts of fans everywhere.
While filming Doctor Who Series 8, the Twelfth Doctor took the time to reassure a little autistic child dressed as a Dalek that it would be okay for him to be the Doctor now.
The clip, posted by a fan to YouTube, was soon turned into a series of GIFS; leading to the aunt of the concerned young girl to post this explanation on her Tumblr page:
Hiya, the little girl in the dalek outfit is my niece, she’s autistic and was finding it difficult coming to terms with the regeneration as Matts doctor is her imaginary friend, she was worried PCap wouldn’t want to play with her. We are very ecstatic that he took time to reassure her. He’s brilliant!
Upon discovering just how far this adorable, touching video had spread, the girl’s mother then posted this entry on her own blog, taking the time to thank the kind-hearted cast and crew of the show for reassuring a little girl that her imaginary friend still wants to play with her:
Next thing a man walks over to us and says to Roxann hello what’s your name, she didn’t answer so I did he then asked how old she was and she whispered 5. He said well im the director and would you like to come with me. We followed him and he called Peter over. Peter and Jenna where lovely and so understanding. Even though Roxann wouldn’t look at them or talk…which is due to her autism. She took everything in that was being said to her by peter. We spent about 10mins with them and I can not express how over joyed and thankful I am to the crew for making both my daughters dreams come true.
*sob…sorry, I just have something in my eye; I’m not crying, honest.
