This is something that I’ve been meaning to write and post for a while now but I was never quite sure when to let it go out on the internet.
warning: extreme word vomit and contains a lot of incoherence and rambles.
This is about a very special, one of a kind experience of mine with EXO, something that now seems like a dream to me until I realize that it did indeed actually happen. This was the best day of my life and the reason why I couldn’t even make myself believe 2014 will be an even better year because this was just too huge for me.
The reason that I was unable to post it earlier was because 1) the filmed stuff hadn’t been released 2) i’m lazy
July 25, 2013. This is before EXO’s repackage album came out. Through some connections that I don’t feel like going into detail about, we (my friend, her younger sister, their mom, and myself) were allowed to be on set with exo for growl filming (well, the timetable schedule stated that but it involved other stuff, such as the Japan Universal Studios holograms). When I say on set, I mean directly on a closed set, in only the presence of directors, cameramen, makeup and coordi noonas, and all 12 exo boys. the only non-working people were us.
We arrived at the filming location (on the outskirts of Seoul) pretty early morning. After all, we wanted as much time as possible with exo.
The first person we saw was Tao. Tao in his makeup less everything state, looking drowsy as ever. We walked towards the door of the set while Tao stood off to the side a bit, eyeing us curiously. I remember locking eyes with him and thinking oh my god oh my god huang zi tao it’s him. He had on a mask covering his mouth so I couldn’t read his expression, but I averted my eyes after a while because too intimidating lol.
We went in and were introduced to the director who let me just say is the nicest person ever. He was super kind to us and started explaining what was going to take place today and what time the boys would be arriving. Tao, he said, was the only member there at the moment because he had to film his wushu scenes first. He told us to take a seat and to enjoy the day. We had been previously told we could take a photo with the boys and he said he would see to that. It most likely would not be with all 12 because “it’s very difficult to gather them all together” but we might possibly be able to take one with whoever was our favorite members. Yes, he then asked us who our favorite members were lmao. Luhan for me and Sehun for my friend. After that chat, he told us to go have some food outside.

I believe it was before 11 am but the food caterer truck was serving lunch. There was also a indoors sitting area along with some chairs outside. After getting our food (I didn’t get my own tray, didn’t have an appetite because I was too queasy at the thought of oh my god eXO) we went into the room and sat down at the first table right as a tall blonde man at the same table was just getting up. Yup, the only and only Kris. We hadn’t noticed him previously but my friend and I both went o_____o at the same time. Kris had drawled out a “i’ll be leaving now” to our table in general but hadn’t looked at us directly. He was oh so tall, and oh so blonde. Oh man.
Then at the table next to us was Xiumin who sat alone with one of the noonas. I didn’t recognize him at first. He, like the rest, was makeup less. My friend and I tried to inconspicuously tell her mother that over there was Kim Minseok to which her mom replied “What? Xiumin?” in a slightly higher volume. We went sHHHHH!!!! pmsl.
Barely ate my meal at all, was too busy paying attention to my surroundings. I was mostly staring out the windows in anticipation of a member sighting and not that long later, Baekhyun strolls by brushing his teeth lol.
For the next hour or so, we drifted in and out of the actual filming set and the outdoors area (that consisted of the food place, restrooms, parking lot, and the opposite building). At one point, Chen walked by singing beautifully. Also, once when we were inside for a while, we decided to head out for a bit. Right when we were about to open the door, it opens and standing right in front of me is Kyungsoo. I froze temporarily just staring into his big ass eyes and he immediately speaks out an “Annyeonghaseyo” while bowing to us, which we returned. He let us walk out first before entering.
Pretty sure everyone there was like are they staff? are they fans? nugu?????? about us the whole day lmao.
We liked to stand behind the computer monitors and see what the director and crew were looking at. It was also adjacent to the dressing room/hanging out room for exo. Unfortunately, the door was closed most of the time so every time it opened our heart skipped a beat. Once it opened and I saw Chanyeol lying on the couch with one leg crossed over the other, while on his phone lol. Also Chen would sing a lot.
Kris came out later in the gray uniforms that we all know very well by now, hair and makeup done and all that jazz. Now the area inside is only dimly lit but he brushed past us directly, only a few inches apart, and I distinctly remember thinking “damn he smells good” lol.
Later Lay walks out and greets us energetically as per his lovely personality. My friend’s sis quietly asked us who that was and my friend replied with “Lay” rather loudly. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Lay turn around for a split second at the sound of his name.
The next person to walk out was my ultimate bias, Luhan. T_________T I had been already dying there I mean there was exos walking around everywhere freely, but I hadn’t seen Luhan yet. He walked out from the dressing room and I just. couldn’t move. He bowed to us as he walked by. I had been standing kind of diagonally behind my friend so he didn’t see me directly then and I was kind of disappointed aha.
We hadn’t been standing there the entire time but walking back and forth from the bench to there. Baekhyun had walked out and was chatting with a noona when we decided to go back to that spot lol. He started turning around just as I passed by and I had to like jerk my entire body away to avoid him crashing into me. He never noticed the near accident.
My friends and I were discussing something then when Kris was in front of us and he definitely half turned his head when he noticed our English conversation. I honestly can’t remember what the heck we were talking about, I only remember me saying “Fifty? Fifty! Nah.” ide it was a long time ago.
I haven’t really been talking about the filmings, but we watched Tao film his badassery wushu scenes for over an hour. He kept going back to check on his scenes to see how he did, and seemed proud. Later the boys all took individual shots with their mama era super powers.
Chen walked in while we were standing behind the monitors again. I had turned around to get a refreshment when I noticed him and he noticed me. We actually just stared at each other for like five seconds lmao. It was a really long staredown before he greeted me along with a bow.
Couple of hours passed by before all the boys were done with their individual shots. D.O’s involved Tao’s wushu stick, Kai’s involved stripping off his really ugly plaid jacket, etc etc. Xiuhan moment!!! Xiumin and Luhan watched each other film. During Xiumin’s part, Luhan was standing by the camera and kept clapping adorably hehe. The two latched onto each other as soon as they were done.
Lay sat outside of the dressing room by himself and was playing a game on his phone for like half an over. We were like omg should we go say hi or something but we thought we couldn’t do that (we were totally okay to do that, director-him informed us after).
Every now and then the director would come over to talk to us and ask us how we were doing. He apologized profusely in telling us that exo’s managers had changed their mind and said we were no longer allowed to take a photo with any of them. This was in part to the fact that sasaeng fans had discovered the filming location. Two had snuck into the bathroom and were kicked out by Female Manager. There was now a group of fans standing outside of the gate ugh. The managers had also stated it was because they were in new!never before seen! clothes and didn’t want to risk us leaking the photos before Growl was released. sigh. We know them now as the red and white striped baseball jersey shirts. But yeah, the photo wasn’t going to happen. They did however take our XOXO albums and have the boys sign them for us. I was disappointed about the photo, but also disappointed that we couldn’t give the

We had gone to the bathroom and walked out to this sight. Kris was in line for food and I knew he was looking at us. I looked up and we made poker face eye contact. I tried to smile but my muscles just wouldn’t contract up and I quickly looked away and sped past him because intimidating.
Most of the boys had already gotten food while some still stood in line, when the director and my friend’s mom walked out of the building. They saw us just awkwardly standing off to the side and he told us to go join the line already!! Now Luhan was the last person in line and my friend’s sis started walking towards him. My friend, aka a real true friend, notes the situation and then yanks her sister back by her jacket while simultaneously shoving me in front so that I’m standing. directly. behind. luhan. in. line.
cue my heart attack.
NOW GIVEN THE ONCE IN A LIFETIME SITUATION THAT MOST PEOPLE DREAM OF YOU’D THINK I’D TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT RIGHT? IDEALLY ONE WOULD STRIKE UP A CASUAL CONVERSATION WITH SAID BIAS AND HAVE A LOVELY, NORMAL CHAT.

I was standing there absolutely frozen solid. The only thoughts going through my brain were “luhan is right in front of me luhan is within a few inches of me luhan is right in front of me I’m standing next to luhan” while my body couldn’t actually move, including my mouth.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Biggest Regret of My Life.
My friends kept whispering for me to say something to him already. say something in chinese. say anything. say hi while I hissed back “i don’t know what to say i can’t do this hELP”. Meanwhile Luhan and Sehun talked briefly. Lay brushed past me and said something in Chinese to Luhan that I can’t remember.
Director-nim, the kind soul that he is, called out to Luhan who turned around immediately. He introduced us as his family (l o l that’s what we posed as) and Luhan greeted us formally and bowed. While he was facing us, we still hadn’t made direct eye contact yet, he kinda just looked at us as a group. He also talked to one of the noonas behind us in rapid Korean and yeah we all know his Korean is like the best out of chinaline but just hearing him right there made me truly *o*.
Minutes passed. Baekhyun sang while getting food. Sehun talked really loudly. Luhan punched Sehun lightly in the arm at one point.
I’m just standing there behind Luhan staring at the pimple on his neck. (“You’re eye level with his pimple”).
Then it was his turn to grab all the utensils and scoop up food. I was like how can i even get food omg touching everything he touched hE LP.
So he got food and he went inside. Outside were Suho, Sehun, and two other members I can’t remember, while the rest were all inside. My friend, a Sehun stan, realllllllly wanted to sit outside bc Sehun but she agreed to sit inside heh 8DDD.

EXO-K’s SunnyD commercial came on and Kris literally pointed at the tv and went “heh heh heh”, no joke.
Suho also walked in after finishing his meal and sat down at one of the other tables to talk with staff before leaving. Soon all the boys were done and quickly left. Later Suho was standing by himself while using his phone. My friends and I debated over approaching him for about a good ten minutes before he finally walked away. We’re actually the worst people ever.
Right before all the boys had to go in for their group filming, suddenly the director walked out with Luhan and Sehun in tow. I froze, again. He was all cheerful explaining they had heard we were their fans so he brought them to greet us. It was already pretty dark outside but first direct eye contact with Luhan while he stood facing me. Yelps.
Hunhan bowed to us like twice and then we were like oh yeah!! we brought presents and oh they’re inside…… and director’s like oh ok so we went inside while luhan and sehun followed us. They waited by the monitor area while my friend and I scrambled to prepare the presents we had brought. We went back and yelps. brightly lit area + staring into luhan’s soul = fucking death.
I shyly handed him the small plushie I had purchased for him while saying “this is for you” in Mandarin. He automatically replied with “xie xie xie xie” before going “oh!” and looking up at me, eyes widened. “You speak Chinese??” he said in Mandarin. I’m like yeah ahaha (while dying) before my friend’s mom, standing by us, told him that I was Taiwanese. He’s like ohhh ok /nods. (Later my mom’s friend told me she was sorry and should’ve let me speak more to him instead of speaking for me but it was too difficult to form words anyway).
My friend gifted Sehun with this jar of korean nutritional thing that was supposed to be good for their throats since they’re singers, friend’s mom explained. Sehun went ahhhhh thank you thank you. (To this day my friend headdesks for forgetting to explain that it was for the use of all 12 of them and not just Sehun LMAO she felt so bad for handing Sehun this big ass bag while not giving anything to Luhan. I had also given Sehun a plushie u_u THAT MIND YOU WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR CHANYEOL BIAS #2).
Then we kind of just stood there staring at each other, with female manager on one side and manager #2 on the other side. She was like “Ne……um.” I forget who suggested it but they were like why don’t you shake hands with your fans! and then Luhan firmly grasped my hand in his. and then afterwards Sehun. gosh sehun is so pretty, was my thought. The boys kept bowing profusely to us lmao. Chanyeol had walked over at one point and put his hands on Sehun’s shoulder, to see what was going on. And then the boys returned to their dressing room.
After that we just watched all 12 boys on one stage at last, and it was really amusing seeing interactions and stuff. The stage was elevated and yet Chen rolled onto it lmao. We didn’t actually stay to the end of it because they wanted to keep Growl undisclosed until its release and so we left after a while. The whole day had passed in the blink of an eye.
