Dec. 26, 2013
CHAMPION swimmer Ian Thorpe rubbed shoulders with Rockdale mayor Shane O'Brien, councillors and St George residents as the guest of honour at Rockdale's annual mayoral ball on December 12.
Head of the charity Fountain for Youth, Mr Thorpe discussed his organisation's efforts to
improve the literacy and education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
More than 200 people attended the ball, with Cr O'Brien saying he hoped to see more
events like it in the future.
"Ian brought home the plight faced by our Aboriginal children in remote communities. So many people here tonight have told me that they were not aware of the magnitude of the problem and as a result would like to get more involved with Ian Thorpe's charity," he said. "I am very pleased that we can help our kids in these remote areas."
The event raised more than $18,000 for Mr Thorpe's charity.
