刚看到一点有趣的东西贴过来:Judges left for 45 min. after our battle ended while we stood nervous, anxious, and emotionally drained on stage. @acoUstiKats

WHAT WERE THE JUDGES THINKING?
The Princeton Footnotes are among the best of the university a cappella ac...ts. There are literally hundreds of university groups and only two made the show this year. They represented, and did so very musically. Obviously someone had to go, them’s the rules I’d like to have a grace period of one episode where nobody went so that I could really see all aspects of what they all do. But such is life in a two week bonanza. We get a few minutes with each group and they have to put their best foot forward. In a way, we’re trying to predict the future in the first episode. What can improve? And will that improvement be enough to win? Hard to say on first listen, but we’ve been in the music biz for 20 years each, and hopefully we get it right.
Princeton’s best foot wasn’t terribly flawed musically but they were one of the two groups that immediately did not convince us could sell records. What would Princeton have to do to clear this issue up? If we allowed them to stay, where might they go? Well, they’d have to be a lot more original. Having seen the development of similar groups, I didn’t have faith we weren’t going to keep seeing more of the same. I scanned the group for potential stars, attitudes, voices, arrangement gestures. I didn’t hear a hook in their sound. Calle Sol was the other group on watch to go home, and the reason that they stayed an extra night was that we felt there was a SMALL chance that they could tune up and improve their act with simple musical tweaks. They didn’t. If that had happened quickly, had Calle Sol come out in tune, in time with some full middle (something all the other groups including Princeton have been able to do), then we would have had a potentially unique group, a candidate for a record deal. I think people would buy the IDEA of what they do, but they have to actually do it. They would get one performance to show us technical improvement. They got that chance and they’re not ready. Hopefully they will keep working and go on to be successful.
And So...
Calle Sol was more memorable but less musical.
The reverse was true of the Footnotes.
This show owes a lot to groups like Princeton because college a cappella has driven the movement. But each group has it’s achilles heel and all male a cappella groups can get lost unless they find a voice and a style that sets them apart. In their world however, they are a wonderful force and all you’d ever want on the college circuit or on the campus. They carry the torch with honor and I missed them the moment they were gone.
Calle Sol represents a Latin flavor of cappella and takes it to Vegas. Both groups had a lot to offer and anyone to anyone who misses either of them, we’re with you. Follow them - buy their records and attend their shows. They will continue to grow if that’s what they want to do.
We currently have notes on what to improve about each group. These groups have about a week to establish that they can swim with the sharks and survive (like Pentatonix have done). What do YOU look for in a group that will be sent out to compete in the ‘real world’?

WHAT WERE THE JUDGES THINKING?
In two brief weeks this season we’ll have gone from meeting 10 new groups to having a winner. They’re dropping like flies. It’s hard for us to work this way and help nurture the growth of a group but ...I’m greedy. I should be happy they’re getting the exposure and credit that they are.
Street Corner Renaissance are full of soul, charm and wit. They have brought an element to The Sing Off that has definitely informed and enriched the other groups. Their faces tell stories and have made an imprint on my mind. It’s just that I can’t as easily remember what they SOUND like. My mind plays back a vague but great doo-wop revival group. I know Sonny has a smooth as silk voice, but it’s not coming back to me starkly even moments after the broadcast.
While we appreciate what they added to the show, we can’t quite imagine what they’re going to add to the world of a cappella by winning. They’ll get steamrollered by groups like Season 3’s mega seller Pentatonix who strive every second to bring something new. What Street Corner lack is simply called ‘hunger’. They have a healthy competitive streak which keeps you on your game, but hunger renders you nearly unreasonable and incentivizes you to take ill advised risks. The kinds of risks that land you in the bottom one second and holding up the cup the next. You might swing and miss, but you gotta swing to win. These guys have all those beautiful things that an overly ambitious group can often lose sight of and their issue hasn’t a thing to do with their ages. Think Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Frank Lloyd Wright, Bill Brandt and so on and so forth. There’s a way to tell a story from their unique vantage point and when it’s done well, boy is it an eye opener. They were looking back too much. We didn’t need them to look forward even, just inside.
“Forget You”… well, it’s a great song but it’s just worn out enough that they could have afforded to convince us it was new again somehow. That’s a tall order but then winning is too. They did a fun version. I smiled. We were very lucky to have them on our show. You’re welcome to disagree with our decision IF you plan to see their shows or buy their records. Street Corner Renaissance - We wish you well gentlemen. You are the classiest of the class acts and you kept us honest.
The Filharmonic. I think it was me who urged that they go into the bottom rung. I’ll take the flack. Here was my reasoning. They are contenders to win, but they’re NOT going to win unless they wake up and discover one small element about themselves that makes them more than just a 90’s style boy band. Also, really, Shawn is right. There is something funky going on from one or two members of the group with pitch and time. It’s hard to hear, but the more we listen, the more we’re noticing it. I think their amazingly entertaining presentation can threw us off the scent the first couple performances, but as the competition gets tighter, so must the harmonies, and so will our ears because they’ve got a few powerhouses to compete against.
I thought the Ultimate Sing Off was a tie. I thought neither did better in their showdown than in their performance. There was no revelation. There is a chance that Filharmonic can win this but they need to try to find that extra dimension that puts you on top. Finding your voice is painful sometimes - they’ve got very little time to do this and I didn’t think they’d have considered going through that process without a kick in the BUTT.
See ya on Monday for more amazing music and more casualties than the Walking Dead Mid Season Finale (do NOT get me started on THAT because there’s no way anyone was more upset about Street Corner Renaissance than I was about Herschel)
