When Vocal runs are utilised by Mariah Carey they are incredibly accurate and always sympathetic to the song's key signature, tempo and style, thus giving her the moniker the "Queen of melisma". It's a skill that can be utilised in each of the registers, as well as travelling through them. Technically a brilliant singer. Mariah Carey's low range is dark and heavy. The midrange can either be thick and slightly nasal- See the Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel album- or airy and light, almost as if whispering. The belting voice is elastic and bright, with the lower half being more resonant- see Without you to compare the low and higer part of the belting register. As Mariah Carey's voice ascends the belting range, up into the fifth octave, its timbre begins to thin, as it's mixed with the head voice, but it remains bright and clear throughout. The head voice and whistle register are easily accessible and can both have their timbre modified depending on what is artistically called for; being either fuller and piercing or softer and airier. Aretha Franklin has a well connected range, that appears to sound easily accessible both at the top and the bottom. The lower range is thick and weighty with a dark colouring and a slightly smoky timbre. The midrange begins to become more nasal, and lighter as it ascends into the belting range. The belting range is incredibly elastic and powerful, having been known to hit a D6 when mixed with its head voice [listen here]. This part of the range is characterful and easily attributable to Aretha Franklin, due in part to its quick vibrato and nasal tone. Though her voice becomes lighter as its frequency increases, it still retains its resonance and power up into its top reaches. It has a slight breathy quality at times, but the voice sounds comfortable in this part of the range. Alicia Keys' midrange is sweet and warm, with a smokiness and slight rasp to it. Her voice finds this part of the range easiest, as well as the extremes on either side of it, to navigate. The belting range is weighty and thick and often shares the smoky quality of the lower range. The notes above the fifth octave are most often reached without the aide of mixing with the head voice, and the resulting tone has a good dynamic, fuller sound and a rawer edge. Alicia Keys can mix her notes- hear How Come You Don't Call Me- and produce a purer tone, but it comes at the expense of the power and fullness of the sound. Rhianna's head voice is soft and airy with a sweet and warm tone and is capable of switching quickly and effortlessly into that part of her range. The chest voice is strongest and most resonate in its lower half (from a B4 to a C5) but is capable of extending up to a G5 where it becomes brighter, and lighter but with noticeably less resonance. Expressive and well controlled voice that does not lean on melisma to impress, though she is capable of using this vocal technique if required. Lady Gaga's low notes are well supported, and have a dark, solid and weighty timbre to them. The mid-range can be melodic and lyrical as well be utilised in a talk/singing fashion- see Poker Face. The lower part of the belting range has a weight, and thick timbre to it along with a strong resonance. This resonance can be carried into the higher part of the chest register- past a C5- but it calls for the use of improper technique, making the sound raspier and raw, as its placed in the throat. These qualities can be eliminated, at the expense of the resonance of the voice, by mixing with the head voice. The sound produced is clearer and brighter with a healthier sound. The head voice alone can be light and airy- see the chorus of Paparazzi- or thicker and with an operatic like tone- see the intro of Government Hooker. The head voice is solid and pronounced, with a brightness and clarity.
