you should only two types of units, your wimps and other powerful units. And than you must keep your wimps alive at end of the battle, also your wimps must attack at least one time. After all of this your wimps can get 50% of the sp from the battle.

All troops share sp in a battle. So you should use no more than two types of the unit when lvl upping ur wimp. Once ur wimps survive the battle and have made at least one attack, he will gain 50% of the totall sp in one battle.
