THIS spring ,Su Xing returned home to China after spending seven years in Australia. The 23-year-old had left home as a child, but when he stood in front of the Happy Boy judges in his father's old suit, he spoke like a man. And he sang like a prince.
Now, Su Xing ,or Allen, is just one step from the top : On Friday night, either he or Chen Chusheng will be named 2007 Happy Boy champion.
Studying in Australia taught Su more than how to sing like a Western pop star .Those years also sharpened his character.
"When I went to Australia ,I wasn't worried about taking care of myself .I've been independent and could get myself to school as a child ,"Su recalled. "Actually ,the complexity of society shocked me - none of it was like the nice world described in our textbook. I just tried to do my own thing and learn many lessons along the way."
Actually ,Su appears to have learned quite a few lessons, both from textbooks and out in society .And his fans have taken notice.
"Allen is an intelligent singer ,"said Jennifer Wang, a 27-year-old fan in Beijing ."He humorous way and acts with polite , elegant manners."
Some have tried to cast doubt on his good manners, calling him pretentious .In fact, he's truly tactful beyond his age .He always speaks properly and responds like a gentleman to the comments of judges. He even puts thought and effort into responding to messages left by fans on his blog. As a result, fans and supporters have begun calling him "Diplomat Su".
"Politeness is just my way of showing respect to others ,"he said ."Everyone has his own way of expression .That's the way I grew up."
Even Su's finalist rival ,Chen Chusheng ,admires his character ."He's always wearing his earphones all day long ,"said Chen. "I was drawn to him because of his dedication to music."
In fact, fans have noticed that Su's often the fastest to learn a dance move among his Happy Boy competitors.
Despite all of this maturity, however, his boyish charm still manages to slip out .Chen Miaomiao, a fan in Nanjing ,often visits his blog to get first-hand news about him.
"He often writes long articles with no punctuation, and you have to read through from beginning to end without pause ,"Chen said.
"This shows his individuality .It's impossible to forget that he's still a 23-year-old boy with lots of imagination and impulse .I want him to show his passion more boldly."
