The Star Trek Chronology lists Spock as having been promoted from lieutenant commander to full commanderfollowing "Court Martial". This is apparently the result of mishearing Kirk's log entry in "The Menagerie, Part I", where Spock is still identified as a lieutenant commander. He is also referred to as a lieutenant commander in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" and is first referred to as a commander in "Amok Time", indicating the promotion occurred between those two episodes. Oddly enough, even when he was a lieutenant commander during the first season, he still wore a full commander's stripes. However, this may have been to signify his position as the ship's first officer. It is possible that he was a brevet commander at the time, with an official rank of lieutenant commander.
