Damon Lindelof, the writer of Star Trek Into Darkness, has apologised to fans for the scene in which British actress, Alice Eve, appears in J.J. Abrams' new film in just her underwear. In a series of tweets, Lindelof accepted that it was "gratuitous" and wrote: "What I'm saying is, I hear you, I take responsibility and will be more mindful in the future." The writer, who also penned Lost and Prometheus, accepted that the scene could be deemed offensive in the way that it sexually objectifies women (particularly as Eve is one of only two major female cast members) and conceded that he "did not want to make light of something that some construe as misogynistic." The criticism arose because fans could see no reason why Eve, playing Dr Carol Marcus, appeared in her underwear. Given that her state of undress had no plot impact, it was suggested that Dr Marcus, who is known for her brilliant, scientific mind, was being reduced to nothing more than an object of sexual desire. The tweets came after Lindelof was questioned on the subject by MTV. He was unable to come up with a satisfactory answer when asked: "Why is Alice Eve in her underwear, gratuitously and unnecessarily, without any real effort made [to explain] as to why in God's name she would undress in that circumstance?" The writer squirmed before claiming it was a "mystery".
