这似乎是最简单的，然而可能又是最难的。如何使用可能要多花费一些篇幅来解释。
当我们首次提到一个可数名词的时候：There is a cat in the bath. The cat is black. 在这句中，用a cat是表示这是我们第一次提到cat；而后面的the cat用the 是因为这只猫被再一次提到，这次我们都知道了the cat是指的那只猫。
a/an 还可以与抽象名词一同使用，条件是抽象名词的后面必须有限定性词组。例如command在表示使用能力、掌握能力的时候，是一个不可数单数名词，所以会有a good command of English language, a limited knowledge of English, or Let me have a think, or there is an abundance of food on display.
他们同样大小，我们可以说：they are all of a size. 每次搬运3个 three at a time.
He think he is an Einstein. 他认为他是一个爱因斯坦。
一套刀叉 a knife and fork.
a/an 可以表示类指: 马是动物。大象是群居动物。A horse is an animal（horses are animals.）. An elephant is an social animal (Elephants are social animals). 但是我们通常说: man is a social animal
