《新・里见八犬传》乃依据日本作家镰田敏夫所撰写的神怪小说《新里见八犬传》（新・里见八犬伝）为基础，再进行改编的电影作品。上映前，特地邀请美国歌手John O'Banion来编曲、写词及演唱电影主题曲〈Satomi Hakken-Den〉。而且，如此运用东西合并的方式，乃是当时的首度创举，影响日本往后电影或电视剧的制作方式。1983年上映后，不但成为日本当年度的话题作品，并创下23.1亿日圆的佳绩。
