Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapor star in this week’s Bollywood release: “Talaash.” The story of an investigation into the mysterious death of a film star, it’s a dark and emotionally-charged tale. The film releases Friday.
The actors spoke to Anupama Chopra on “The Front Row.” Here is a transcript of their conversation.
Anupama Chopra: Aamir, Bollywood doesn’t throw up too many suspense dramas. Does the Hindi film form make it inherently difficult to do suspense effectively because you have to have songs, a love angle?
Aamir Khan: No, it’s not that. In fact in my opinion it can be an extremely popular genre and all good suspense films that we have seen over the decades have been smash hits whether it is “Jewel Thief” or “Teesri Manzil.” The kind of a person I am, I don’t follow genres. I like to go with the flow. A script comes to me, I like it or I don’t like it. If I like it I do it, I don’t bother about the genre.
Anupama: All of you have worked with each other before. Aamir: Have Rani and Kareena evolved as actors? What do you think?
Aamir: Kareena, I worked with for the first time in “3 Idiots.” I was really impressed with her. She is someone who really throws herself into the work. Rani, I have seen a huge change from “Ghulam” to now. But both of them throw themselves into the character, into the film and I think that is really wonderful. Both of them are actors who like to give and take when doing a scene. That is how I like to work as well. I don’t like to work in isolation. Some actors work in isolation. That kind of throws me off, so I like that connection when you are doing a scene. They are also both really superb human beings. I am really fond of both of them, they are no-nonsense, regular, casual people and I really like that.
Anupama: In interviews, all actors say that they don’t care about box office numbers. But with every big film, publicists send press releases detailing the opening figures, when the film has crossed 100 crore rupees (1 billion rupees, or around $18 million). As actors, is it difficult to choose an unconventional, grittier film than “Talaash,” when the conversation is so much about making hits and making it into the “100 Crore Club”?
