Rafa只有一次和Starace交战的经历,是在2005年的Buenos Aires(阿根廷首都)当时Rafa以61 63的成绩击败了他.今天则62 75击败了他.
另外值得说的是,这是连续的第70场胜利.Rafa也将是继Mats Wilander之后连夺3次Barcelona冠军的网球选手.
Rafa has met Starace just once before today, when he beat him 6-1, 6-3 on clay in Buenos Aires in 2005. A slightly easier win than today’s 6-2, 7-5 victory.
The first set went with serve until at 2-2 Rafa took advantage of his first break point as Starace hit a cross court forehand wide. Rafa got his second break of the set as his trademark ground strokes set up an easy backhand volley which he put into the open court leaving him to serve for the opening set. He had little trouble serving out the set with Starace hitting into the net on game point.
Starace opened the second set and managed to keep his nose firmly in front . At 4-4 Rafa came within two points of losing his serve for the first time after a couple of stunning forehands from his opponent. Rafa recovered to break the Italian in the next game as Starace put his shot long, he would now serve for the victory.
There was still another twist to come in this long second set as Rafa was broken by Starace, who has risen up the rankings this year. Normal service was quickly resumed as Rafa broke straight back and this time made no mistake as he served out the second set 7-5.
In addition to winning his 70th consecutive match on clay, Rafa is also on course to become only the second person, after Mats Wilander to win the Barcelona title for the third time in a row.
