CHAPTER ONE MYCROFT'S DEAR DIARY
Mycroft Holmes had a less-known fact that he wrote diary everyday. Yes, everyday. He had started his first book since very little and now it had become a habit with him. At the beginning he noted down things happening chronologically within a day as all other children did. As time went by he preferred recording remarkable events to making daily minutes. Sometimes simply a few lines would do. Once in the right mood and time Mycroft would like to flood the page although such a case was rare. He was working on the portion for today at this moment in a really cheerful mood.
"We've got married." He put a line under today's date and ended it with a pleasingly plump period. Then he closed the book and got on his feet to put the dairy on the bookshelf. A number of notebooks of a kind were neatly aligned on the second shelf, dark covers and thickness making them serious. Mycroft took a good look at them with a smile, wondering that he should let Greg come over and admire them too.
Greg Lestrade, the name presenting everywhere in Mycroft's dairy, was the very spouse mentioned in the marriage above, Inspector of Scotland Yard. Greg surely had knowledge about those dairy books but he never read any. In his opinion, the events recorded in paper by the important Mycroft must be of great significance. Domestic or international issues, he reckoned. Probably both.
Mycroft however never denied Greg's guess even if his writings had nothing to do with the nation or the globe but were actually modest. It could be a random sight caught on the street, or a phone call of concerns. Thanks to his marvelous brain Mycroft barely needed a hard-copy To-Do list. What was more, he had got Anthea, the best assistant one could ever image, who made life and work easier as a walking calendar.
Mycroft went to hard copies since he enjoyed the comfort when touching the pages and smelling the odor of ink. All those made him feel real and brought the memories back vividly. For instance the line he did today. Mycroft couldn't help beaming and falling into the thoughts of the very beginning.

CHAPTER TWO THE DESTINED ENCOUNTER (1)
As one of the mass coordinators in the world, Madam Robinson was a textbook. She was in her late thirties, serious and rigid. Good and hardworking pupils were surely her favorites whereas those naughty and annoying ones were definitely trouble makers if you asked her. Now she was looking at a boy in her stern look.
'I feel so sorry and disappointed with you. What did you promise me last time? To be good and well-disciplined?' she said harshly.
The boy being blamed however said nothing. He dropped his eyes upon the floor quietly but his lips puckered, suggesting that he didn't quite take her point.

CHAPTER TWO (CONT'D)
'Hello...' said the little one nearby in an unsure tongue.
'Oh, hi!' he replied and had a quick glance at the little. 'New here?'
'Me? Yes, I am. I've just got transferred and this is my first day,' the little said and held a corner of his brand new uniform in order to relax himself while the other looked cozy in his mis-buckled outfit.
'Nice. Welcome! Not a shabby place to be honest with you.'
'Really? Thank you very much! I should have introduced myself. My name is Mycroft, Mycroft Holmes.'
'And I'm Greg. What's your name again? Mycroft? Hmm...sounds decent, doesn't it?' Greg sighed with emotion and Mycroft looked happy.
'It was from the Old English, centuries ago.'
'No wonder. Sounds Christian to me.'
'I'm not one, sorry.'
'Oh, don't be silly, I don't mind at all. Me neither. How old are you?'
'Eight...'
'Of course you look so small! I'm soon eleven by the way. So you must be in Grade Two. I'm in Four.'
'Nice to meet you, Greg.'
'Me, too. You know what? Feel free to come to me if somebody bullies you. I cover you.'
'I heartily appreciate it. Well actually, I'm not in Grade Two, but...'
The door to the Dean's office, ajar just now, was fully open spontaneously before Mycroft finished his line. The Dean stepped out and called Mycroft with a happy face and tone. 'Welcome to our school, Mycroft dear. Your application was very impressive. I can't be more sure that you're gonna have a good time here.'
'Thank you, sir!' said Mycroft politely, darting a glance at his freshly-made friend to find a twinkle from Greg.
'Madam Robinson, you're right in time! Could you please do me a favor to lead our new boy to his class?' said the Dean to the coordinator lady who just came back.
'Pleasure,' said Madam Robinson. Mycroft nodded to Greg quickly and then left with the lady.
'Now you, Greg Lestrade. How dare you put caterpillars in your teacher's purse! It's merely the first week for God's sake!' began the Dean as soon as the two left.
'She blamed my classmates for doing wrong without investigation! And she didn't listen to their explanation!' Greg tried to reason.
'Now you are arguing...'
Neither of them even bothered to save their volumes. Too loud to miss the talk. So he was Greg Lestrade, wasn't he? Mycroft wondered. He must be righteous and brave. Then Mycroft realized that he didn't tell Greg that he was also in Grade Four in the next second.
* * * *
When the two came to this funny first sight in the following years, Greg always took it as the moment when the good rich met the shabby poor. Yet Mycroft personally considered it as a grand opening of the rest of his life.

* * * *

CHAPTER THREE SEED FOR FRIENDSHIP
Small children were angels, pure and naive. Nevertheless such innocence cast more hurt at times compared to real mean behaviors.
As a newly-come, Mycroft became popular soon after joining the class. He was certainly the youngest as he had skipped a couple of grades. Polite, neat, super smart and cute. He was tagged with all the key words. Teachers liked him, so did the class.
Well maybe not the entire class, since Greg was still not happy. Definitely he was glad to see Mycroft again but had never thought to see him in the same class. He felt himself so puzzled and silly at the moment the teacher introduced the new kid to them. He should have told me! Greg yelled aloud in his mind.
It seemed that Mycroft sensed Greg's mood so he went to him initiatively. Consequentially, Greg got very pleased and they became buddies.
The atmosphere for Mycroft was easy yet not for Greg. As a matter of fact although Greg was always ready to help, the class didn't count him as much. Kids said, 'Greg is not good in scores. Greg is loud. His family is poor and populated. You may get involved if you are close to him.'
Mycroft in no way cared about those chatting. Yet words came around. In a small society such as a class, it was not that easy to ignore something utterly. Even Greg himself was kind of influenced, on the brink to go nuts.
Finally it was over the brink.
'What's up, Greg? How is everything?' Mycroft tried to be stable when he was blocked at an alley one day after school.
'Then you tell me how everything goes. What's the matter with you?' said Greg irritatingly, looking gloomy. 'Heard something funny?'
Feeling ashamed, Mycroft said, 'They said...I am not supposed to be friends with you.'
'Why? What's wrong with me?' Greg had got his angry mixed with confusion. 'Save it, you punk!'
'It's true. If they find we're friends that will be the worst trouble ever!'
It was hard for Greg to tell his emotion at this very second. Being offended or being hurt? Maybe both. 'I thought we've already been friends.'
'That was what I thought, too. But they said...'
'The hell they said! I'm asking you, what you think, and now!'
'Friends, of course!'
'Blimey, loyalty!' mocked Greg bitterly.
'Seriously Greg, I do think so. I say what I mean.'
'Then do what you say!' Greg felt tired and was about to leave.
The born talent Mycroft Holmes had never been in such an occasion during previous years. He liked Greg as a person very much but he was also in the buzz of gossips. Greg ought to outweigh the rest, shouldn't he? Mycroft got stuck on the math.
"Shan't let him go! Never!" Such a thought came to Mycroft suddenly and he caught it at once.
'Greg, wait!' he called loudly and dived over. 'I'm sooooooo sorry for what I've said and done. I'm so stupid...lost what I really want. You mean so much to me, Greg! We're still friends, are we? Please Greg, don't be mad with me.'
Watching Mycroft confess in an urgent tongue that had never been heard before, Greg could do nothing but give in. 'You...don't say that. I'll be a retard if you're stupid. Fine...dunno why you feel so bad...I'm the one to be blue, aren't I? OK, OK, stop it. We're friends. You hear me, we are friends. Very good friends.'
'Beyond that!' Mycroft burst into laugh when he got the words.
'Right, beyond that,' smiled Greg too, considering the whole case as an act of the spoiled little. Mycroft was merely eight after all, he thought.

CHAPTER FOUR LE COTTAGE DE LA RIVIERE
"Greg is the first friend I've ever had. He is certainly the best. I should not have let others' minds bother me since I have mine." Mycroft ended his diary with this paragraph. Then he recalled something and put another line there. "The hell!" Mycroft decided to use Greg's expression.
Mycroft hadn't had an early childhood as likeable as he was because of his clear mind. Although it wasn't anti-intellectualism or whatever, being a nerd was not something cool anyway. Hence he valued the friendship with Greg above all. And Mycroft put it into practice.
He mentored Greg when there was any problem in study.
'Here should be "oui" in lieu of "si".'
'Any difference? They are both yes, aren't they?'
'True. Well "oui" is simply yes and "si" somewhat has something to do with the negative context.'
'Like?'
'Say, are you having dinner with me? You use oui. If I say "aren't you having dinner with me?", how do you say "yes, I am"?'
'Eh...si?' said Greg uncertainly.
'Exactly!' said Mycroft, smiling. 'Let's have dinner.'
He pacified Greg when somebody said annoying again.
'Oh, don't tell me you are mad about what she said.'
'Even she said Greg was a moron?'
'Well see, it takes one to know one.'
'...so I shall say Mycroft is awesome?'
'Oh dear!' said Mycroft in a drama tone. 'You're embarrassing me.'
He joined Greg after school for average boys' fun.
'You do fishing?' Mycroft was absolutely shocked.
'Oui! Quite into it,' said Greg proudly.
'Gee!'
'Why gee? Don't you see I'm a huge fan of sports?'
'Si! But fishing is sedentary. How can I picture you sit still?'
'Now you can as you're with me today. Let's go to the reservoir and I will be a good teacher.'
'Well thanks for your offer. On that note I guess I can show you something.'
'What?'
'My family has a place by the river. Let's go there, shall we?'
It was Greg's turn to be astonished.
'Oh my dear Lord!'
'Excuse me?'
'When you mentioned "a place" I though it was merely a hut!'
'Isn't it?'
'Of course not. I mean look at it. Two up, two down and a fireplace! I can live here. What a cottage!'
'Is it?'
'You're not actually living in a palace, are you? Do please inform me in advance if we're going to your house next time!'
'So I take it as you like here?'
'Very much!'
* * * *
An arrogant little bastard. Greg labeled Mycroft as so. As to Mycroft, he felt very fine with such a remark. 'You are the one and only to call me bastard,' said Mycroft. Greg cast him a 'how-honored-I-am' look as reply.

* * * *

CHAPTER FIVE CHRISTMAS KISSES
"How time flies!" Mycroft took this sentence in writing, feeling cliché for using it. Yet time did fly. Before everyone had realized it winter was officially on its way. After Halloween and the Guy Fawkes night, London was filled by a lively air of Christmas and one could hear Yule singings on the street and in any shop.
'Tis the season to be jolly, falalalala, lalalala!' Greg was busy with homework, singing. Holiday break though, he still had plenty to do. Teachers had assigned books and assays, let alone the list offered by Mycroft who said 'Reading is good.'
Nevertheless it was Christmas and even Mycroft was not in the mood to bury himself in books after all work done. Right now he was killing time in Greg's and as joyful as the singing boy was. 'You know you're coming to the Ball tonight, don't you? Got ready?'
'That's why I have to finish here first. You want me to dress up? No kidding!'
'No dress code. I'm saying presents.'
'I'd given you one before, remember?'
'The one you used to hit me on my face? Yes, I know that one.'
'Oy! It cost me an arm and a leg, you ungrateful bastard!'
'How sweet! Shall I tear my eyes? What's taking you so long by the way? You've been working for ages.'
'This thing is driving me crazy. I've no idea what it's talking about.'
'Let me have a look.'
'Excellent!' Gray cried, 'now I'm all set.'
'Elementary,' said Mycroft at ease. 'Then let's move!'
It was fresh and chilly outside whereas people were of holiday cheer. Jingle Bells was heard all along the road, bringing people the mood.
'Take my hand, take my heart, take my whole life too. Take your time, take my love, it's good and pure and true...'
'You do love singing.'
'And I do have a good voice,' Greg bowed. 'Thank you very much.'
Mycroft would like to hold his laugh which was hard. 'Here we are!'
'Holmes Palace, I'm coming!' called Greg.
'Don't pretend new. You'd been here once.'
'To hit you face, I know. Yet I'd come all this way to say sorry while you were worrying to be seen at that moment!'
'Just let it go. It's Christmas! C'mon, let me show you the house!'
'Surely you will! Didn't get time that day.'
Two boys took a good look and Greg even had a chance to hold the newborn baby. 'He's so small and fragile! Has he a name?'
'Sherlock.'
'Old English?'
'Yes.'
'I see.'
'Snowing!' said someone at the window. The boys moved over to find a white ground so they chose to go out.
'Surely white,' laughed Greg, jumping around the yard.
'Not yet. It takes time.'
'Yooooou...'
'Would you carry on singing?'
'Pardon?'
'The song on the way. You didn't finish it, did you? Continue.'
'I knew you love my voice!' said Greg happily and began. 'The gift of love is hard to find. I've searched my whole life through. God above has smiled on us. This Christmas I got you...'
The smell of food was fading, so was the noise of the Ball. Mycroft was so into the scenery in front of him that he couldn't help kissing Greg on the cheek.
Everything went blank, so did the two. The last thought Greg had was not 'Good Lord Mycroft kissed me!' but 'Is it wet on my face?'.
'Wot...en-hem! What was that for?' Greg found his voice dry.
'Mistletoe!' answered Mycroft too fast.
The two looked around and finally saw mistletoe miles away. They both burst into laugh. ‘Merry Christmas!' Greg kissed Mycroft back on the face. 'Listen! I love this song! Let's get in.'
'You know Portuguese?' said Mycroft, bravoing by heart.
'No. But I know Lambada!'

“Tis the season to be jolly, falalalala, lalalala!”
“Take my hand, take my heart, take my whole life too. Take your time, take my love, it's good and pure and true...”
“The gift of love is hard to find. I've searched my whole life through. God above has smiled on us. This Christmas I got you...”
All Wrapped up in You.
