Among the best aspects of the current revival of "real" singing in black pop is increased attention to delicately wrought background vocals, complex elaborations of musical themes and the sheer exuberance of experiencing refined craft and thoughtful lyrics. All these elements are generously featured on Chanté Moore's notable debut, Precious. Ranging from the exhilarating stride she measures on the title track to the infectious groove of "Who Do I Turn To," Moore explores the sweet entanglements of contemporary love with a supple soprano that floats over and into songs.
On "I Wanna Love (Like That Again)," Moore lassos and rides a breezy Brazilian beat as she frames the inevitable passing of innocence after love's loss. On the quietly affecting "Listen to My Song," Moore captures the desire to be appreciated beyond the senses. She pleads over Paul Jackson Jr.'s gently weeping guitar: "So, look at me/But not with your eyes/Touch me with more than your hands." With Keith Washington, Moore presents a shimmering exploration of sustained romance on "Candlelight and You." Moore's big first single, "LOVE'S TAKEN OVER," features the intriguing amalgam of a menacing bass rhythm and featherlight, densely layered backup vocals, capped by her seductive celebration of love's control of helpless lovers.
Chanté Moore's superb singing and writing will unquestionably win her a satisfied audience. (RS 655)
