Alan Smith made a special visit to the club’s Study Support Centre recently to take part in a question and answer session with pupils from Moss Park Junior School and Stretford High School.
The striker, who is currently working through a special training programme to enhance his fitness, chatted with pupils about numerous subjects including his rise to football stardom, his favourite TV show (The Simpsons) and preferred holiday destination (Tokyo).
He also gave some of the budding young footballers within the group advice on how to go about becoming a professional. He stressed the importance of enjoying a healthy lifestyle and urged the youngsters to stay clear of drink and drugs.
Alan thoroughly enjoyed his time at the centre and believes it provides excellent support for youngsters.
“I always enjoy getting involved in community work for the club and it was great to meet the pupils,” he said. “The centre has great facilities and it’s fantastic that the youngsters have somewhere to come if they need extra support outside of school hours.”
The Study Support Centre, which is based in the museum in North Stand, is part of The Department for Education and Skills
‘Playing for Success’ initiative. It uses the environment and medium of football, rugby and other sports as motivational tools and focuses on raising literacy, numeracy and ICT standards amongst pupils.
