"I’m just back from WTF and I thought I’d check out VB before going to
bed. I just want to say how proud of Rafa I am. He has never
disappointed me and I don’t think he ever will. He fought hard tonight
but it was not to be and, if the security guard we had several
conversations with during the breaks is to be believed (and I don’t see
why he would tell us a pack of lies), it’s no wonder. The guard was so full of praise and respect for Rafa. He said people had no idea how ill he’d been with the food poisoning/sickness. He was really bad, apparently. So bad, in fact, that (according to this guard) he had been intending to withdraw from the tournament after his match against Fish but then Andy Murray pulled out with his injury and Rafa felt he couldn’t pull out as well so he agreed to play Federer. He told us Rafa said, “We will give the fans what they want.” He said Rafa is an amazing guy, which got no disagreement from us. He did say Rafa seemed to be feeling better physically today but still wasn’t 100%, by all accounts, and having just watched the match I see no reason to disagree with that assessment. He tried hard but it looked to us as if he just ran out of strength and focus in the third set, the poor lamb. ... "
