USOpen.org: How are you feeling about Real Madrid’s season?
Fernando Verdasco: I hope they play better. I think they are right now. Real Madrid and Barcelona are even two levels above the rest of the teams in Spain and also in Europe. Manchester United can be one team right now that is close to Madrid and Barcelona. But I think right now these two teams are by far the best teams. I don’t really follow them so much, of course. If I have the time to see them when they are playing, I see them. I just follow the news a little bit, and when I have the time, I see it.
USOpen.org: Who is your favorite non-tennis athlete? What other sports do you follow?
Fernando Verdasco: It was always Michael Jordan. I follow the NBA. I like the Lakers and Miami Heat. I really support and like many, many sports. I really like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade – all the good players.
USOpen.org: You have been in Cosmopolitan. Would you model for another magazine?
Fernando Verdasco: It is about what reason you are doing the pictures and if it is going to be a good interview. You need to see everything; it is not just about the magazine. You can be in the best magazine, but if the photos or the interview is not good, then maybe you are not interested in doing it.
USOpen.org: What did you do during Hurricane Irene?
Fernando Verdasco: It was not as big as we thought it was going to be in Manhattan. I was sleeping. I didn’t feel anything. It was windy and raining. I didn’t do anything special. I was just in the hotel room more time than usual.
USOpen.org: What is your favorite place to go or thing to do in New York?
Fernando Verdasco: I don’t have a favorite place. New York is a great city, and there are many places to go. I like to go to Central Park, Soho, Fifth Avenue, Union Square. There are many places. I like to be with my friends, family, go to the cinema at times and, when I have time, just do regular things.
USOpen.org: What do you do off court when you are home in Spain?
Fernando Verdasco: When I am in Madrid, I might play a soccer match with my friends, my cousins, just like a friends’ match. Nothing special, really. Going to dinner with friends and family.
USOpen.org: What kind of car do you drive?
Fernando Verdasco: Audi.
USOpen.org: Do you collect anything, or is there one type of item you have a lot of?
Fernando Verdasco: I like watches, but I think Feliciano [Lopez] has more than me. I have a few, but I don’t have a collection or anything. I try to win matches. I love cars, sport cars, but to make a collection of sport cars is a little more expensive.
USOpen.org: How were the hamburgers you ate during Spain’s Davis Cup Quarterfinal matches in July against the U.S.?
Fernando Verdasco: The matches were very long. I was hungry. I asked somebody from the team to grab a burger or hot dog from the food court at the stadium, so they brought me a burger and a hot dog – real American food.
