ThefirstrecipientistheMercedes-AMGGT4-DoorCoupé,anelectricfour-doorusingthreeofthesenewaxial-fluxmotors.Intotal,theygivetheGT63upto860kWwithlaunchcontrolinitiated.AndthatcansendthenewAMGrocketto100km/hinaclaimed2.1secondswhile200km/hisregisteredin6.4secondsenroutetoa300km/htopspeed.
Thehighlyskilledteaminspectsthemotor’sindividualcomponents.
Makingthedifficultrepeatable
Finalassemblyisevenmoredemanding.DuringwhatMercedescallsthe‘wedding’,thestatorispositionedbetweenthetwomagnet-equippedrotordiscsandpermanentlyjoined.

Magneticforcesofupto9kN,equivalenttoroughly900kg,actonthecomponentsduringthisoperation.Despitethatpull,thestatormustremainwithin0.1mmofthemagneticcentreplane.Anautomatedcontrolsystemmonitorstheassemblyandmakeshigh-frequencypositionalcorrectionsduringthefinalhalf-secondoftheprocess.
Axial-fluxmotorshavepreviouslyappearedinlow-volumesupercars,butMercedesintendstobuildthematascalesuitableforanexpandingAMGrange.
Thesinglefront-axlemotormeasuresjustunder90mmwide,whileeachoftherearmotorsisapproximately80mmwide.Theirslimdimensionsallowtwomotorstosittogetherattheback
Theinitialline-updemonstrateshowwidelythesystemcanbetuned.TheGT55’s600kWisalreadysubstantial,helpingitreach200km/hin8.7seconds.ItalsohasaclaimedWLTPrangeof700km.
TheGT63liftspeakoutputto860kWwhenlaunchcontrolisactiveandthebatteryhasatleast80percentcharge.ItsclaimedWLTPrangeisslightlylowerat696km,althoughitretainsthesameultra-fastchargingcapability.Mercedessayssuitable600kWinfrastructurecanaddaround460kmofrangein10minutes,whilea10–80percentchargetakes11minutes.
Merc’sBerlin-Marienfeldefactory,wherethenewmotorsaremanufactured,hasspentmorethan120yearsbuildingconventionalautomotivehardware.ItslatestproductcouldnowhelpdeterminewhetherelectricAMGsdevelopacharacterasdistinctiveastheV8-poweredcarsthatcamebeforethem.
