Horus had instigated the betrayal and his Legion had been instrumental in the slaughter at Isstvan Ill, following the Warmaster willingly into fratricide. This earned the Legion as a whole the brand of 'Traitoris Perdita' and any who bore the mark of the Eye of Horus would forever be viewed as an enemy of the Imperium.
The Sons of Horus had not been alone in earning the complete damnation of the Imperium and their co-conspirators
eventually received the same. It is said that it was through a network of secret warrior lodges that the corruption in the xVIth had taken hold and had even spread to other Traitor Legions, a practice that had also ushered warriors of other lineages along the same dark path. In retrospect, the malign inluence of individuals such as First Chaplain Erebus of the Word Bearers held far more sway over Horus' actions than had been evident at the time of the revolt, and it was through his accomplice's dark machinations that his descent into darkness had been hastcned.

Fulgrim, the Primarch of the llId Legion,
had fallen victim to a different strain of
corruption, his loyalty to the Emperor already undermined by the time Horus came to persuade him to his cause. Fulgrim and his Emperor's Children became key components in the Warmaster's grand plan. As with the Sons of Horus, not all of the warriors of the IlId Legion had renounced their oaths of allegiance, and individuals such as Captain Saul Tarvitz and Rylanor had remained true to the Imperium and defied their
Primarch's will.

Hundreds of Legion warriors, those of the XII and otherwise are reckoned to have died by Angron's own hand alone and more still by the deeds of his Traitor sons.

harbouring a resentment for authority that Horus leveraged to sway him to his cause .
Whether to their Primarch would be suffcient to bind the Sons of Barbarus to the Warmaster, or if they would see their father's new fealty as one that held him thrall to yet another unworthy dictator, may yet have divided the Legion.
Certainly, as embodied by Garro and those that crewed the Eisenstein, some elements of the XIVh Legion remained loyal to the Imperium and stood in defiance of the Pale King, but whether such warriors represented a significant portion of the Legion after the efforts to purge them from the ranks at Isstvan Ill remained unclear at this juncture.

It had been merely four decades since Lorgar Aurelian had felt the humiliation of the Emperor's condemnation and had been forced to kneel in the ashes of Monarchia. At the command of the Master of Mankind, the Ultramarines had razed the once majestic city and had stood at the side of the Emperor as the XVII Legion in its entirety had been forced to eschew their faith and repledge themselves to the Imperial Truth. Shame and simmering resentment could have been motivation enough for the Word Bearers to turn coats and join with Horus at this point in time, using his treachery as a means by which they could vent their spite.

The fraternal relationship between Rogal
Dorn and Konrad Curze had been strained to breaking by previous events, further casting the character of the Primarch of the VIII Legion into doubt after his Legion had been accused of bringing the name of the Emperor into disrepute with their questionable battle doctrines and terror tactics. The two brothers had come to blows, with Dorn left bloodied by the Night Haunter's hand in the exchange, but judgement for these actions would never be passed as Curze escaped his captors and travelled to his home world of Nostramo, there he had exacted vengeance upon its people for a betrayal unto himself . If retribution or a new domain of their own was to be the result of an alignment with the Warmaster, it may have seen the Night Lords turn against the Imperium. Dorn at least hoped that the VIII Legion had ambitions that would set them at odds with Horus, destabilising the Warmaster's rebellion before it had a chance to reach Terra.

Perturabo and his Iron Warriors had never shared a close kinship with Rogal Don and the Imperial Fists, indeed the Lord of Iron had little in the way of closeness or commonality with any of his brother Primarchs. Ever outcasts, Perturabo and his Legion were set apart, characterised and shaped by the grim and thankless operations they were often forced to undertake.
Increasingly disillusioned by their experiences and pushed to breaking point by the revolt and resultant extermination of the people of Olympia, it took no great feat to imagine the Iv Legion finding easement in joining the Warmaster's rebellion, where Perturabo and his sons might finally fnd the validation for their endeavours they had long sought.

In the early years of the Great Crusade, the Raven Guard had fought closely alongside the Sons of Horus, to some seemingly used as a tool by the commanders of the XV Legion . It was not until the XIX Legion had been reunited with their Primarch, Corvus Corax, that they had been reforged as a new weapon, but such a shift in purpose caused rifts within the body of troops. Although Corax had
sworn his Legion would never serve Horus as their master again, there may have been those amongst their number that would have gladly rallied to his banner if only so that they could be worthy of his favour once more.

Salamanders the least. Ever had Vulkan's sons served the Emperor and the Imperium with honour, even when tested beyond the point at which all others would have broken. Even then, this could give rise to the smallest crack within which treachery could take root. Had the Salamanders already bled too much for the Imperium and could they be expected to bleed yet more in its name?

The enigmatic XX Legion were always an all but unknown quantity, and many of the actions accredited to them throughout the Great Crusade were unverifable or contradictory in nature. Few of the Primarchs who had interacted with he who claimed to be Alpharius and the Legion under his command could be said to have enjoyed an open alliance. The majority instead had experienced misdirection, subterfuge and secrecy from the isolated and largely self-suficient Legion. Despite this iniherent intangibility and untrustworthiness, the aid of stike forces that claimed to hail from the Alpha Legion could not be ignored by the Imperium at this time of dire necessity.

Through his impetuous zeal to exact his own vengeance upon Fulgrim for daring to suppose that he might be turmed against the Emperor, Ferrus Manus became the de facto held commander of the Isstvan V assault. His Legion had already been wounded by the duplicity of the Emperor's Children, and swift and bloody vengeance would be the only salve they would accept.
Although outwardly Dorn remained confident of the integrity and loyalty of the Legions he had tasked with subjugating the errant Warmaster, it is perhaps most likely that, in his pragmatic wisdom, he had quietly chosen to accept the possibility that others amongst his kin were destined and indeed intended to turn against the Imperium. Dorn had no choice but to test their loyalties in combat, to grant them a place in his host and order them into combat with the Arch-Traitor Horus - only then could Dorn learn the truth of his brother's intentions - only then could Dorn know the truth. Further, in testing the loyalty of these Legions Dorn had hoped that even should they prove lacking in zeal, they would have at least had their strength diminished through attrition by the time they would eventually return to Terra from distant Isstvan. The Retribution Fleet had been sent out not
only to quell a rebellion but also in some cases to test the character of those it was comprised of, and, in others, to expend their strengths - only in blood and fire would the true extent of loyalty be revealed.
